According to Leica Rumors http://leicarumors.com/2016/04/06/leica-announces-firmware-update-3-0-0-0-for-leica-s-typ-007.aspx/ Leica have just released a new firmware update for the S.

As these cameras share similar software is this a hint to future developments for the SL.

I doubt it.  None of the fixes listed in the S firmware update are items that I have heard users requesting for the SL.  It might mean that there is now a software engineer available to work on the SL, but that's about it.  Even that is only a wild guess since Leica may subcontract firmware modifications.  I wouldn't read anything into it one way or another.

There are applicable changes that would be welcome to me on the SL.

From David Farkas's review of the new firmware:

http://www.reddotforum.com/content/2016/04/leica-s-typ-007-firmware-version-3-0-0-0-released/

"Distance information on top display is now dynamic

This is huge. I have found myself relying on the DOF information on the top display more and more, especially in my landscape photography. It’s truly one of my favorite features of the S007. Up until now, you had to half press the shutter release each time to see a reading, after tweaking the focus. Now, just turn the focus ring in MF mode and the distance information shows in real time without any button pressing. This makes me very happy.

Distance information on top display is switched (front and back)

Another optimization to the DOF information on the top display. While this makes logical sense, displaying the focus positions relative to the camera, I’ve grown accustomed to the old way. I’m sure the readjustment will be a quick one."

The S[007] has two card slots, but one is for an SD card the other for CF, and there are only two storage modes "serial" and "both/backup."  I don't think we can look at the S firmware as the path to introduce more flexible management of the two cards on the SL, such as DNG's on #1, JPEGs on #2, as several other cameras offer.
