Steller's Jay

Common Jay of the western U.S.

These birds are notorious for stealing small items and food left outdoors on picnic tables. I lost a fine Cuban cigar to one of these birds last summer while on a field trip. I can only hope it enjoyed a good smoke.  :)

Beautiful, Bill. Be careful about admitting on the internet that you had a Cuban cigar. Some people with badges might pay you a visit. Was the cigar lit?

Thank you everyone.

Brent,

I live  close to Canada where they are legal. I was up in the Cranbrook, Canada  area so I broke no law. It's silly the things politics dictates. I only smoke on special occasions so I figured I might as well enjoy something special.

The cigar was resting on the edge of a picnic table while we eat lunch. It was not lit at the time. I was saving it for after the meal to enjoy with a glass of wine. The jays were all around and we tossed bread crumbs to them. We placed some at the end of the picnic table and they would land, take the bread and fly off. That's when one of the jays snatched the cigar and flew off. I could not believe it happened. All had a good laugh and I learned a lesson about Steller's Jays.

I envy you, Bill. I also smoke cigars very infrequently--usually to keep gnats away while fly fishing on warm, muggy days. But on those occasions, I like to smoke the best I can get my hands on. Cuban cigars are a very rare treat around here.

Brent,

The price of those things is so expensive. They are a rare special treat. Nice you mentioned fly fishing. I've been a fly fisher since 1976. Just love being on the stream enjoying nature.
