Why X2, X, X-Vario, Q and SL are bl**dy useless

It's not just a digital annoyance. You also had to activate the self-timer each time you took a shot with the venerable M3 (but at least you did have the option of a shutter release cable). The X2 has a shortcut button for this (and I assume the other digital Leicas have this also). However, it would be so simple to implement an automatic timer setting that one wonders why it hasn't been done. This may be testimony to the fact that tripod use is declining.

Because they lack the self timer setting. So each time you use them on a tripod you have to access a menu. Leica,: why, why?

So there you go, don't waste your money :p

Because not many Leica users know what a tripod socket is for, hence for many users it would be a redundant and anachronistic feature. No joke.

I'm lost on the technical problems implied by this topic.  Is some  supporting information  missing?  What's the relationship between self-timer and tripod?  My tripod doesn't interfere with access to my menu or camera settings.

When the camera is mounted on a tripod or copy stand, the screen might be in a position where you can not see it easily or at all. Using menus in this situation is cumbersome.

I have started using the C in some of those situations which can easily be controlled with a mobile phone. However, I would prefer using the XV with its very nice lens.

Wiht timer: For 5 photos (for merging) you press shutter 5 times.

Without self-timer:

First frame you have to to go to menu, find timer, set timer, and press shutter.

Second frame you have to to go to menu, find timer, set timer, and press shutter.

Third frame you have to to go to menu, find timer, set timer, and press shutter.

Fourth frame you have to to go to menu, find timer, set timer, and press shutter.

Fifth frame you have to to go to menu, find timer, set timer, and press shutter.

I really don't mean to be condescending, but you should really try before asking if you have any of these cameras :)

BTW, here is a shameless boasting selfie from last year.

The size of fish and smug grin is not the point. Try taking such as selfie by accessing a menu with wet and slimy hands from contact with fish. The M240 is mounted on a mini tripod and timer option used. The fish is kept in a net until photo is taken. With X2 I wouldn't even try. With M240 its doable.

First of all, that is a beautiful fish.   Congratulations.

Second, while you are right about how the Q works you are incorrect about the SL, which allows you to select a 2 or 10 second self timer and have that setting remain for as many frames as you like.  One shutter push for each just like the M.  I do not have any of the other cameras, so cannot comment on those.

For merging photos, wouldn't it also be possible to have a burst of 5 shots, setting the shutter on continuous, or a bracketed set of 5 shots?  In that instance the M would also be simpler because it allows both self timer and bracketing at the same time, but the SL could still work if you used the remote release or the remote control on the phone app.

Thanks!

The SL is different from X2 then.

Sorry, I was unclear about merging. I don't mean HDR, but stitching (merging in LR). I haven't tried phone apps on Leica, but om other cameras I have tried they are IMO to much hassle. Imagine the selfie setup above with cellphone in addition and trying to operate both camera and cellphone. No offense to those that find the apps useful. I do however use the cellphone for GPS tagging, but then I only start up app at beginning of travel and stop at end.

So for me the ultra-simple solution with dedicated HW mechanical switch simply cannot be bested.

What exactly is the problem with the self-timer? On my SL and Nikon, I have to get to the menu also.

My Nikons have the setting on a ring top left as seen from rear.   To do a photo shoot,   I set my lights & do a selfie so I know everything is right before customer shows.

Menu is only for setting the duration of self timer.

I think my M8 & M9 are exactly the same,  but I never used ST on Leica

On my Nikon as well. Very convenient as it stays on as long as the switch is not moved. And very useful when doing focus stacking.
