Where does it grow ? UK or France ? And what's the size ? Does it have any leaves ? It looks a bit like an orchid ...

South of France but at 700m altitude. It is about 25cm tall. Very little in the way of leaves.

If it is an orchid, I could ask my wife who is a very keen orchid grower and propagator (every corner of our UK house seems to have three or four orchids in it). Even if she does not know, she is often down at McBeans of Cooksbridge, one of the world's largest orchid growers, who are only about 1km away from our house.

Half press and move the focus ring and you will see it on the top LCD display ......

I couldn't see much use for it till I tried to take some star shots in the dark behind our local church  ....... hardly anything to see so it is the only way to get shots in focus ......  adjust till focus point is just infinity ...... and gives the maximum DOF for foreground

It is actually very useful and a doddle to use.

I agree, very useful for night shots and/or tripod use. I assume you were in MF.

Still waiting on a pre-order list here in the US and according to my dealer, not likely to be in stock for some time.  Is there an issue with manufacturing?  Or are they steadily (but slowly) trickling out?

Trying this lens out a bit further, the close up performance is superb (close to wide open at the longer end of the zoom).  The bokeh is pretty good for such a complex lens.

Longer range shots are more hit and miss, partly due to the atmospheric haze, and because I still need to figure out the best focusing mode.

Canadair fire-fighting amphibian aeroplane, over my house today. This was taken with the SL and 90-280 hand held at 280mm. Pure serendipity that I caught this. I was actually on the way back to my letter box, as I had seen a quite big (about 1 metre long) asp viper sitting on my drive beside the letter box, when I went to check to see if my Amazon order had arrived. The viper appeared to be very comatose, since they are very shy and usually scuttle off as soon as they sense footfalls. However, as they are very poisonous, I thought using a tele lens was sensible. When I got back with the SL, it had vanished but a flight of three Canadairs went over very low, about 200-300 feet up. Focus was very rapid and went immediately from very fuzzy to fully focused. You can even see the rivets on the nose section.

Couple of shots today with the 90-280, just before the storm hits. Annoying because I want to watch Baku GP Qualifying and I will lose satellite reception. I can sort of get Sky via internet but the connection is flaky and keeps needing my VPN to be reset, just as you get to an interesting bit.

Above pic is not cropped. View on 20" screen makes subject at life size.Minimum LR adjustments to RAW image before export to JPG format. Shot taken with handheld under soft lighting condition, ISO set at auto, @ 12500 some banding appeared at lower left of pic above. Exposure set on T @ 1/1000. Overall the lens is a joy to use. Not light but when one starts shooting, easily forget about the mass & bulk. Focus really fast, accurate and silent. Like the 24-90mm, only experience AF hunting when subject is poorly lilted with combined strong back light. I'm still learning to use the lens, have yet to successfully capture good image on bird in flight pic.

That horizontal banding across the bottom of the frame seems odd since there doesn't appear to be any visible in the rest of the frame and it appears to simply stop around 1/6 the way up the frame. Was this visible before LR adjustments were made? It almost looks like a sensor issue to me and not a noise issue. I've seen banding in high-ISO shots but nothing like that yet.

It was not visible when I viewed the pics even after LR in my smaller screen Mac Book Air, therefore I could not answer your question.

I had seen banding appearing in images captured by my M240 @ ISC 3200 in low light having clearly visible banding across 1/5 of the image in the past. Comparing them, the banding I see on my SL's ISO 12500 image is mild.

How would it not be visible on the Mac Book? Are you saying it's something to do with Flickr or the forum's software?

My MacBookAir screen is smaller, so I thought that was the cause for banding not visible. You brought a new consideration on Flickr software,....interesting.

Being an M shooter at heart, this is the size and weight comparison for my taste and purposes

You should also post an image showing the M +24mm 35mm 50mm 75mm and 90mm lens, 135mm 80-200mm + adapter and a 280mm prime (or 105-280)  and a set for sensor cleaning ;)

Why?

Because in theory, that is what you would have to carry to replace the SL plus 24-90 and 90-280.

IMHO it is horses for courses. I am going back to the UK for a few days at the end of the week, with small hand luggage only, so I am going to leave my SL and take my M with a 35 ASPH Summicron, one spare battery and nothing else in the photography line.

Twisted logic to me but I see now where the previous poster is coming from

I don't know how many lugged around such gear for the M system - I didn't and never will.

It is obviously personal preference and using what one thinks is the right tool for what he/she wants to accomplish - so yes, agree with you that it's H4C and it's good to have the choice.

As a second system in parallel to the M, having gotten used to the size and weight of the SL system over the recent past, I can consider shooting exclusively with the SL+ 24-90 and a native 35mm prime whenever it is released. The 90-280 is not a range I use frequently but the resulting images are spectacular everytime I use the lens.

An excellent platform camera envisioned and executed upon by Leica.

Even with the M lenses, I'm having a blast using the SL.

One man's poison is another man's meat.

No camera system is perfect and no AF system is perfect either.

The SL and M are simiar on 24MP CMOS sensor but with have different strength and weakness.

My thoughts are to keep the M with compact lenses to take advantage of the compactness but at the same time accept its limitation due to RF focusing range. Having said so, I also do not attempt to ask for my SL Kit to be compact and light as it allows me to extend the application it offers with AF and longer focal length lenses. The Noctilux and Summilux 21mm M lenses are great lenses but they're easier to use on the SL than M, which I would move it over to support the 24-90mm & 90-280mm zoom. I would keep my 35mm Lux and 90mm corn to my M for MF application. Oh,..I'm not giving up either system and see no need for alternatives to own a Nikon or and Canon DSLR.
