jmahto Posted March 28, 2016 Share #141 Posted March 28, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) If you're interested, I posted four more photos made with this lens this morning: http://www.l-camera-forum.com/topic/253192-leica-sl-image-thread-post-your-examples-here/?p=3015552 Went through them. Lovely pictures. I am wondering whether it is GAS that makes me think about it? (I already have 80-200 vario and Voigtlander 180 APO Lanthar and it turns out that 180 Elmar's weight is very similar to 180 Lanthar.)
Advertisement Posted March 28, 2016 Posted March 28, 2016 Hi jmahto, Take a look here 90-280/2.8-4. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
ramarren Posted March 28, 2016 Share #142 Posted March 28, 2016 Went through them. Lovely pictures. I am wondering whether it is GAS that makes me think about it? (I already have 80-200 vario and Voigtlander 180 APO Lanthar and it turns out that 180 Elmar's weight is very similar to 180 Lanthar.) I re-bought various focal lengths I had in Nikon F and Leica M lenses because I find the ergonomics of the R lenses is very appealing to me. (And I can use them on my R8 or Leicaflex SL bodies when I want more to shoot film ...) AND, at the time I bought my R lenses, they were quite inexpensive for the quality they represent. helged Posted March 31, 2016 Share #143 Posted March 31, 2016 The lens is apparently shipping by now. Looking forward seeing a comparison between the 90-280/2.8-4 at 280mm compared to the legendary APO-Telyt-R 1:4/280mm. Anyone, anywhere out there...? Looking forward seeing a comparison between the 90-280/2.8-4 at 280mm compared to the legendary APO-Telyt-R 1:4/280mm. Anyone, anywhere out there...? Don't expect a sharpness comparison. The SL sensor is a joke compared to the Telyt 280/4 nominal performance. Edited March 31, 2016 by CheshireCat
thighslapper Posted March 31, 2016 Share #145 Posted March 31, 2016 The lens is apparently shipping by now. Looking forward seeing a comparison between the 90-280/2.8-4 at 280mm compared to the legendary APO-Telyt-R 1:4/280mm. Anyone, anywhere out there...? apparently there was a delay in packaging and then the chaos created by various easter related holidays. my dealer was promised 3, but only one will be arriving this week (well it has left Germany, at least) which they will ship on to me as soon as it arrives. unfortunately I leave for Italy on sunday so it looks very unlikely I will have it before I go ......

The nearest dealer (1.5 hours away in light traffic, 3 hours away in typical traffic) doesn't have the 90-280 yet, as of two days ago. The first 5 are pre-sold.
helged Posted March 31, 2016 Share #147 Posted March 31, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) Thanks fellows - looking forward to learning from your experiences)! CheshireCat: Valid point, for sure. But eventually, Leica will climb higher on the pixel-ladder, and by that gradually approach the resolution of the 280APOf4. AlanJW Posted March 31, 2016 Share #148 Posted March 31, 2016 Don't expect a sharpness comparison. The SL sensor is a joke compared to the Telyt 280/4 nominal performance. Don't expect a sharpness comparison. The SL sensor is a joke compared to the Telyt 280/4 nominal performance. I think I would prefer to analyze actual results from this lens on the SL before I called anything a "joke." Your conclusion is probably true of the APO Summicron 50mm as well but the results are superb.

Agreed, the 280/4's performance on the SL, though far from realizing the lens' potential, is anything but a "joke". It will be a very long time before a digital camera's sensor challenges the 280's resolution.
cpclee Posted March 31, 2016 Author Share #152 Posted March 31, 2016 Mark Strachan posted remarkably detailed 100% crops at 90mm and 280mm. The oof-rendering looks a little unpleasant (wavy-looking) for me, though, both in the soccer photos by Vogler and in the bird photo by Strachan [with reference to the fb-page]. Early days, I guess. steppenw0lf Posted March 31, 2016 Share #154 Posted March 31, 2016 I do not know if Jono reads this forum or if somebody could give him a hint. I am no member of facebook and I get no permission to look at the fotos if I follow the link to Jonos "group" in fb. Can he change the permissions ? (for non-accolades ;-) Thanks . LocalHero1953 Posted March 31, 2016 Share #156 Posted March 31, 2016 I'm not sure I see the "wavy" look, but, it's certainly not silky smooth - but the sports photos are shot at ISO3200-16000, if I read his posts correctly, so noise reduction could be struggling to cope. helged Posted March 31, 2016 Share #157 Posted March 31, 2016 High ISO can not explain the oof-rendering seen at top of the "Mono Magpie - Wye River, Easter, 2016" photo of Strachan (https://www.facebook...s/leica.sl.601/). For my eyes, the same oof-rendering is seen in the soccer images as well. All according to my eyes, that is...
cpclee Posted March 31, 2016 Author Share #158 Posted March 31, 2016 I see what you mean in the soccer images. The audience is behind a net and that might be the source of the effect. The Wye River photo looks fine to me. High ISO can not explain the oof-rendering seen at top of the "Mono Magpie - Wye River, Easter, 2016" photo of Strachan (https://www.facebook...s/leica.sl.601/).
