Bohns Posted March 7, 2016 Share #1 Â Posted March 7, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi all, Â I just bought a used Summicron 35 ASPH. The seller provides a UV/IR filter with it. I will use it on a M-P 240. I read that UV/IR filters were required when the lens was mounted on a M8 or M8.2, but that it would not fit on other digital M (M9, M9-P, MM1, MM 246, M 240, M262, M-P 240). Is there a risk of IQ / color degradation if I use a UV/IR on my M-P 240 ? If yes, why ? Â Thank you for your insights. Regards, Stef.

spydrxx Posted March 7, 2016 Share #2  Posted March 7, 2016 Of course it depends on the light you are working in and the results you want. But generally the answer is no.
Peter Kilmister Posted March 7, 2016 Share #3 Â Posted March 7, 2016 I only use filters if there is rain, drizzle, mist, or sea spray. As someone once said to me, "What's the point in paying so much for a fine lens and then put glass in front of it?" It seems a good question to me. Â Â ...so you don't muck up a really expensive front element, perhaps scratch it in cleaning or impact from UFOs?

If is a good quality filter, no risk , in general ... but in some specific light situations (expecially in dark images with strong light sources) you can have some issue of undesirable reflections... at "M8 times", when UVIR were almost mandatory , in the forum several examples were posted. Bohns Posted March 7, 2016 Author Share #6  Posted March 7, 2016 If is a good quality filter, no risk , in general ... but in some specific light situations (expecially in dark images with strong light sources) you can have some issue of undesirable reflections... at "M8 times", when UVIR were almost mandatory , in the forum several examples were posted. It is a Leica UV/IR E39 filter. Would you please show some example of those "issues of undesirable reflections" ?  By the way, thank you all for your fast answers. I should understand that it should be OK on my M-P 240. I will try as soon as I will have received it and keep you informed.  Regards, Stef.
jaapv Posted March 7, 2016 Share #7 Â Posted March 7, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) I would advise to use the B&W 007 filters or Heliopan "protective" They are made of thinner, superior coated glass to counteract negative optical effects and are impact-resistant. I.e. everything a Leica UV filter is not.
