My Quest for the new 28mm

A local dealer has accepted a $100.00 deposit on the next 28mm that comes to his store.

He told me his Leica rep told him to expect it in 5 MONTHS!

So, I should see it in November.

Wild eh?

They not really as scarce as hen's teeth but rarer than hen's feathers. If you look around, they turn up somewhere within shipping distance every week or so. So leaving a deposit may not be wise.

I had noticed one of the 28/2.8 Asphs (coded) in my local dealers about 6 weeks back. Having since bought and M8 I went back and bought it last Thursday. Even negotiated a good price on it.

They also have the 35/2.0 Asph, but it wasn't coded so gave it a pass.

It's worth the wait. I got mine the day I bought the M8, and it's the best all-round lens I have. My own homespun tests suggest image quality is better than the 35/2ASPH, at least in terms of definition and contrast.

Darren,

(1) Did your dealer quote a definitive price when he accepted the deposit? If not, I would find that unethical. If yes, I wonder how he will be sure about the price in 5 months time (Leica pricelists do change and usually upwards).

(2) I could look around for you in Hong Kong (where I live). We seem to be rather well supplied (talking genuine goods with international warranty here).

You just have to look around on the NET and call around to local or not so local smaller dealers.

I'm betting there are 28/2.8 ASPH's out there in smaller shops just waiting for someone to come in and buy it.

There are some shops out there that have them in stock or can get one quite quickly. Sometimes that mean importing from other countries. There is huge demand for consumer products and anything expensive in China, so a lot of stock go there as well, I think.

I got a coded 28 cron about 2 months ago, and it was the second lens I bought for the M8, after having sold all my film M gear to go DSLR route a while back :( .

Anyway, I really like the coded 28 cron. It's fast, easy to operate and has extremely good IQ.

I have a firm price and I also have a refundable deposit if I find one someplace else.

Still waiting for the camera, should be a week or so away. I'll use the 50 summicron to start, add the 28 and the 90 from there.

Thanks everyone for your support.

Leica is way back logged in lens production

B&H has been listing > half their lenses as out of stock or back ordered for months

the November date is not all that unrealistic, I am afraid

an agent at Tony Rose told me that they have been told of a price rise later this summer & I understand from another reliable dealer that the folks in Solms are not increasing their staff, as they do not "anticipate the increased business to last"

I can understand why they may be reluctant to add employees, given work rules that are likely as protective in Germany as they are in the US

however a simple truth is you cannot use M cameras without lenses & ironically the M8's success may prove a logistic liability

I very recently got the 28/2.8 ASPH as my 30% discount lens with early M8 purchase. I bought the Camera in November and got the lens in May. It is terrific and worth the wait, especially as I had held onto a Zeiss 28/2.8 in the meantime--no too shabby either. They are shipped now and then, just as the 50mm/1.4 ASPH that Leica lost at my expense (time-wise) in the coding process and suddenly sent to my dealer (black anodized and not BP) four months plus later. This is a long waiting game unless you pursue it outright at all dealers on a daily basis--assuming that you (unlike me) have the time... Don't give up. And don't pay someone double the cost just to get what you want right away. There are a lot of scams going around now.
