rjsphd Posted March 4, 2016 Share #1 Posted March 4, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) I bought a 21MM Super Elmar 3.4 and have to make a decision in the next 36 hours to keep it or not. (Ebay) I shot a roll of color film on my M6 and noticed that the pictures have a consistent exposure at medium to higher f stops, but wide open there is noticeable light falloff in the corners, particularly the upper right (horizontally). Is this endemic to the lens or do I have a problem with this one? If it is this is a problem with my particular lens, what would cause it? If this is a problem with the 21 SE 3.4 in general, can it be corrected in Lightroom easily? I am a novice clearly and the reading I have done on reviews of this lens mentioned a little falloff, but this is noticeable wide open. I would post shots, but I stupidly didn't have them scanned professionally and my scanner ain't the best. For what its worth, I am looking to use it with a M 240 (to be bought) and I got a good price on the lens. It is extremely clean on the outside, focus and aperture rings are smooth. What do I do? a.noctilux Posted March 4, 2016 Share #2 Posted March 4, 2016 Hello, 21mm has more vignetting than longer focal lenses. You have a graph here to compare with others: http://www.summilux.net/m_system/objectifs/SuperElmarM21Asph-V.jpg Regards, Arnaud
Rick Posted March 4, 2016 Share #3 Posted March 4, 2016 Rob, don't panic. If, you got a good deal on it and feel it is in good condition and you feel it might be off... then I would send it to Leica for a CLA. I have done this before. I bought a 35/2.0 current Summicron and it just didn't come close to my 35/1.4 FLE. Sent it to Leica and now I have a very hard time telling the difference. It came back with a year warrantee and my piece of mind. Ship it off to Leica while you wait for your M240. Rick p.s. Welcome to our obsessive group. Has anyone seen my pills? edit - I see you have been here since 2008.
LeicaR10 Posted March 4, 2016 Share #4 Posted March 4, 2016 RJSPHD, I agree with Rick's comments above. I own at M 21mm SEM and its superb. It does have some fall off at the edges when shot wide open, but not much. If you got it for a great price, then do as Rick suggested send it to Leica for a CLA. If you are not comfortable with the results you have so far and don't want to wait 6 weeks for your lens to come back from Leica, (be prepared to send it back to Leica a second time, as even Leica doesn't get it right the first time with repairs) then return it to eBay. There might be a very good reason why the lens was being sold on eBay for the very reasons you have discovered. That is the risk with buying on eBay unless the seller accepts the item back and you get a refund. Its a hassle. Just a bit of advice, I wouldn't buy high value items (based on experience) like Leica products unless its from a camera store seller that has a return guarantee. But once you get a great working 21mm SEM you won't ever let it go...its a great lens. r/Mark
