Dark Goob Posted June 2, 2007 Author Share #3 Posted June 2, 2007 It's a Russian copy..........a fake, not worth much. Ah. What are the telltale signs?
andybarton Posted June 2, 2007 Share #4 Posted June 2, 2007 Easy. It looks like it's been left out in the sun too long and has melted. Find a photo of a real one, and these fakes stand out a mile. Everything is "wrong".
Rona!d Posted June 2, 2007 Share #5 Posted June 2, 2007 No matter if fake or not - the finder has a damage
bill Posted June 2, 2007 Share #6 Posted June 2, 2007 Have a look here: http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-collectors-historica/13842-ltm-users-its-time-stand-up.html At some examples of the real thing. You'll see that they look "finer" - the edges are crisper, the casting is more precise, the milling and knurling is both sharper and finer. The plating is totally different. The camera you have pictured - probably a Zorki or something - is a crudely made copy that was produced in great numbers. They are honest cameras in their own way, and attract a loyal following in their own right. What is wrong about this example is that someone has gone out of their way to make it look like a Leica.II. luigi bertolotti Posted June 3, 2007 Share #8 Posted June 3, 2007 Russian by sure: I've seen many... classical look: can be antywy interesting for some kind of collection, if very cheap; the lens too looks like the classic "Elmarski"
bill Posted June 3, 2007 Share #9 Posted June 3, 2007 I have one of those Russian lenses - more contrast than a zebra crossing, but if you want soot and whitewash, occasionally it is useful to have in your "palette" - and cheaper than a paintbrush! stephanvdz Posted July 19, 2008 Share #10 Posted July 19, 2008 of course it's a fake leica... but there is one bizarre thing and it could be a very rare fake leica... it seems to have a 1/1000 speed, if this is functional it's a rare piece because it means it has been build on a FED-S base wich is fundamentally a prewar fed with a 1/1000 speed... (between 2000 and 20000 made between 1938 and 1940, fakes are rare because you need the additionnal 1/1000 speed) need to be verified ... It's stupid to make a fake of a model that never existed , no leica without slow speed provision ever had a 1/1000 speed... it's even stupider to modify a FED-S because per se it has a far higher value than any badly faked leica... stephanvdz Posted July 19, 2008 Share #11 Posted July 19, 2008 just to compare thius a true fed S (don't joke it's about as rare as a nice wartime IIIC) Welcome, dear visitor! luigi bertolotti Posted July 20, 2008 Share #12 Posted July 20, 2008 just to compare thius a true fed S (don't joke it's about as rare as a nice wartime IIIC) FINE !!! We are so accustomed to see Leica - engraved FEDs that an original with its nice cyrilliyc looks a desirable collectible !!!
dennersten Posted July 22, 2008 Share #13 Posted July 22, 2008 just to compare thius a true fed S (don't joke it's about as rare as a nice wartime IIIC) It looks extremly cool. Can you post some pictures to show us how the lens works?
stephanvdz Posted July 22, 2008 Share #14 Posted July 22, 2008 that's another part of the story... it works... a bit like a summar... but strictly BW only ;-) the lens is a FED 50/2 specific for the fed S (production unknown between 2000 and 20000 from 1938 to 1941)... by the way the lenses and bodies have to be matched (non standardised flange distance) There is also a Fed 100/6,3 and a FED Macro 50/3,5 and even a very rare 28mm (never seen one)
steed Posted July 23, 2008 Share #15 Posted July 23, 2008 no one mentioned the "skin" on the fake, either
stephanvdz Posted July 27, 2008 Share #16 Posted July 27, 2008 the skin looks like a prewar fed... Fed specialists will give their advice... but this could even be a period fake... (a bit too shiny for that may be)... quite a rare item if it is one...
