G. van Asch Posted January 27, 2016 Share #1 Posted January 27, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have the new SL with 24-90mm lens. I am happy with this camera because I'm 65 and the autofocus/EVF is a pleasure. I am waiting for a new lens. The 90-280mm is to large for me. Is there anybody who can give me an advise about the new TL 35mm/1,4 lens or the new SL 50mm/1.4 SL lens.( coming the end off this year.) I would like to buy a new lens but is it importent enough to wait for the SL lens? Please advise me, Gerjan van Asch
Advertisement Posted January 27, 2016 Posted January 27, 2016 Hi G. van Asch, Take a look here New lens. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
FlashGordonPhotography Posted January 27, 2016 Share #2 Posted January 27, 2016 The TL lens will cause the camera to shoot in crop mode. You will get a ~10MP image using TL lenses. The SL lens will, of course, use the full sensor area resulting in a 24MP image. The SL lens will have less apparent DOF than the TL lens at the same aperture. The TL lens will be significantly smaller/lighter than the SL lens. It's really up to you as to how important each of these things is. Gordon
Jared Posted January 28, 2016 Share #3 Posted January 28, 2016 If you just want a light weight "carry around" lens for the SL, I'd actually recommend one of the TL lenses. I have the 18-56 (which I got with my Leica T) and it does a very nice job on the SL. Responsiveness is much better than on the T. Of course, you only get 10mp of resolution, so don't expect to make really big prints, but as long as you just want a convenient, light, compact, high contrast lens to make images you can share either the TL lenses are a really good choice. The 18-56 handles very well on the SL, and you won't miss the extra megapixels for most uses. Don't forget if you go this rout that you will be "gaining" a full stop worth of depth of field. That could be good or bad depending on the situation. I don't take out the 18-56 if I think that day's pictures will need the extra resolution, but it's sure a h ℅ of a step up from my iPhone for snapshots, and it's much less of a commitment than the SL zoom while still giving me more flexibility than a 35mm or 50mm M lens--both in terms of focal length range and in terms of subjects. There are some things that are just a lot easier to handle with auto focus. That's why I bought the T in the first place, despite already owning an M. I think a lot of people are horrified by the thought of "wasting" all those megapixels when they use a crop lens on a full frame body, but there are a lot of days and events when those megapixels are going to be "wasted" in any case. I'm never going to make a 30" print of my daughter's riding lesson. I'm just not. So why carry the 24-90? On other days with other subject matter I definitely want the features of a full frame camera, but not every day for every event. Guess it just depends what you are looking for in a second lens. Other things you might think about if you want to push your photography outside of what you are doing now with the zoom... What about an ultra wide angle? That might be fun to play with for a while. Or perhaps an R telephoto and the required adapters? You'd need an R to M and an M to T. Of course you'd have to live without image stabilization, but the SL is a pretty good high ISO camera so that may not be a problem. Either of these would extend the capabilities of the SL, and sin e you don't want the weight of the forthcoming zoom... Just some options to think about. -Jared
G. van Asch Posted January 28, 2016 Author Share #4 Posted January 28, 2016 Jared, thanks for this excellent answer and advice. I will buy the T 35/1.4 summilux for the SL and wait till the end of the year when the Leica adapter for the R lenses is available. Gerjan
steppenw0lf Posted March 8, 2016 Share #5 Posted March 8, 2016 While you are waiting for a new lens, have you ever tried the Summilux R 2.0/50 . It can be bought used often in perfect shape for little money. It is very handy, it is actually my standard-lens. It is quite small (even if you add the adapters) and it gives you the full resolution (I do not know how important this is for you). In my opinion it is one of the best lenses I own (nice quality wide open, very high quality from 2.8). I use it daily and find it very easy to focus, much easier than on R4 or R5, my other Leicas. In the worst case I use also focus-peaking which is very nicely implemented. Additionally I could use the 10x magnification, which I rarely do. I am wearing glasses and do not take them off for taking pictures. So my eyesight is also not ideal. (astigmatism) I use the R-lenses with the Leica adapter stack. I saw no advantage in waiting for the single adapter. I had already the R to M adapter and thought the M to L adapter would be useful anyway. So in the meantime you could give this a try - maybe you have even a collegue or friend who could lend the R 50 to you ? Sorry I did not see your thread earlier, but then I had the camera just freshly received and was too busy. So maybe you have now already your second lens. Guest Posted March 8, 2016 Share #6 Posted March 8, 2016 I may look at the R Macro 60mm and the 100mm Macro coupled to a Novolflex adapter for studio work. The T zooms work also very well with the SL
thighslapper Posted March 8, 2016 Share #7 Posted March 8, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) the 2 other zoom lenses for the T (outside what you have) ..... the 11-13 and 55-135 are very high quality and work perfectly on the SL .... albeit cropped.... and the 'larger' telephoto is quite light and compact. you could always buy and use these then part exchange/sell when more SL specific lenses appear..... or get a T as well and use them to their full potential. The T is a very underrated camera and a perfect spare 2nd body for the SL .....
cpclee Posted March 9, 2016 Share #8 Posted March 9, 2016 The native 50/1.4 for SL looks like it will be almost the size of the 24-90. So the only thing you will gain by adding this lens is the 1.4 aperture at 50mm. I'd personally prefer to get a 50 Summicron-R with an adapter if manual focusing is no issue for you. As pointed out the Summicron is relatively inexpensive and the performance is superb. Or you might go for a E55 or E60 50mm Summilux-R but the cost advantage would be a lot less. The 35/1.4 TL is very interesting and just might be the compact AF prime that a lot of SL users should want. I have the new SL with 24-90mm lens. scott kirkpatrick Posted March 9, 2016 Share #9 Posted March 9, 2016 The T is a very underrated camera and a perfect spare 2nd body for the SL ..... Right now the T is available at incredibly low prices (in Leica units), but a little slow (I guess it is underpowered) to AF. The backup role will really make sense if there is an upgraded model with speed and firmware improvements. As long as each one still is lovingly polished by hand for an hour or so, of course. I couldn't use it without that. scott
