New Jupiter 3 lens from Lomography

Works my end...

It said the page I wanted no longer existed so I assumed that it had been a direct link to the relevant page. I found it via the amateur photographer article.

Thanks for the heads up. If it gets good reviews I may be tempted to add it to my 50mm Collection.

Indeed, the Zeiss seems a much better deal for a current Sonnar design. My two original J-3s produce great pictures (well, one is somewhat 'better' than the other) and cost me a fifth (including CLA) of the price of this new version. I have bought a couple of Lomography lenses - and they are fun to use - but I don't really see the point here...

I guess the point is more choice. The Jupiter is less expensive than the Zeiss, and it's LTM mount so it might be of great interest to some Barnack users.

Yes one can buy an old original Jupiter but some people prefer to buy new and not risk issues that might affect an older lens.

So there's a few points!

Does anyone know if they have corrected the slope of the rangefinder cam and/or the helicoid from the original Jupiter 3 to LTM standard. You can shim the original ones to be in correct focus at say 2 to 3 metres or infinity but not both. Probably acceptable on film but will be obvious on digital. This also applies to the Industar 22 5cm f3.5 I have. I believe this was something to do with the Russians using Zeiss/Contax pattern helicoids not Leica and the FED/Zorki etc cameras' rangefinders are set up to suit this.

Wilson,

Despite my original scepticism, I ended up playing with one last week.

It's a nice lens that appears to be much better corrected than the original and does not retain all of its funky characteristics, which may or may not be seen as a positive.

I did not have the lens for long, and didn't specifically test for focus accuracy at various distances (was more interested in general rendering), but couldn't notice any major issues other than some very mild focus shift, probably inherent to the Sonnar design.

As a side note, the person who received it said it came out of the box with a wobbly focus ring and he had to tighten a couple of tiny screws to fix it, so QC may be an issue.
