Dear Members

Why sometimes people call Noctilux, esoteric lens?

It's possible to say that is a just a myth for market and etc. I am not interesting with this opinion. I am interesting why only Noctilux has this myth? Thank you for share your opinion. or Link.

As a proffecional artist I know In history of the paintings we have some secret substance, for example Amber, which was used by Werner, Salvador Dali wrote a poem about Amber. Its still in secret. Producing in Belgium by Blockx small company. Very expensive. I am using Amber for my paintings projects several years. it works very well it gives 3D effect to colours and saves for hundred years.

Well, I think you are reading too much in it

The lens is special for a few reasons:

1.The DOF is narrow, the Out of Focus rendering is of high quality, giving images from the lens, if taken wide open, a special look.

2.The production process is difficult, using special optical glass and narrow tolerances.

3.The lens has a very high price

4.Some social groups use the lens as a status symbol.

This makes the lens special, desirable, a specialist lens, a tool for a certain style, but never esoteric.

(Thorsten sometimes gets carried away in his own enthusiasm ;) ;))

I just googled that and I see that some people have described it as 'esoteric'. Esoteric can mean abstract or magical so I guess that's what they mean, in relation to how the lens renders when wide open (stopped down it's not so different from other lenses although I'm sure some will disagree).

The Voigtlander Nokitcron should also then be described as 'esoteric'.

Depends on how you define esoteric. It can refer to something only understood by or meant for a select few who have specialised knowledge enabling them to appreciate or use it. I suppose that when first the Noctilux became available its intended use (at full aperture) would have been considered of very restricted application, so it would have been bought by a just those few who could effectively use it within the confines of its extraordinarily narrow depth of field, generally in low light applications. Accordingly it could be described as esoteric I suppose, as it was potentially of use to only a few aficionados of a highly specific type of photography. Things change though and Noctiluxes are used by many for a variety of reasons today so I doubt that the label of being esoteric still applies today.

I think they mean it's only useful to a small number of people. Or because of its high price, only available to a small number of people. Either of these usages would be reasonable.

It doesn't imply that only a small number of "insiders" can understand it though, except to the extent that its high price means only a small number of people have the opportunity to get to know it well.

Anything mystical in this respect is out of place or a mis-use.

Thank you, concerning process of making this lens and "social status" you are right. also I thing earleygallery is right about word "magic". Magic is more close to this lens.

As a visual artist, I am very sensative to the image. I bought Noctilux because of the way how noctilux makes an image. its not because nice bokeh, but incredible 3D illusion and how it works with light ( it's kind of destructurialisation of the light and new structurialisation in same time) which close to Amber in painting history. But for sure on other level. I work with on other lenses, but I did't had a feeling that the process to work with lens is infinitive, with Noctilux I have impression that is infinitive process to discover new and new surprises. For sure that is my personal opinion.

Interesting, though I don't share your feeling.

I'd encourage any photographer to explore the infinite possibilities presented by any lens. The Noctilux is no more infinite than any other lens of course, and they are all slightly different.

In my opinion, when there is anything that might be described as magical in a photograph, it will come from the photographer's personal resources, aided to a surprisingly limited mechanical extent by the equipment used.

I can't say it works for other like it works for me. the same with pencil. You can find more and more in drawing. But personally for me I was really inspirited with this lens much more and deep then with others.

It's good that you are inspired by a lens, and that you get pleasure from it.

And many artists do find that one tool is best suited to the work they do. Maybe this is the case for you with this lens. But I do hope that it is your creative imagination that is in the driving seat, and not the qualities of the lens, if you see what I mean.

For me quality of the tool is important part of creation. is a part of it.  it's very complex process to create something new. its cross point of ideas, inspiration and since. some times technology can inspire process. Art needs science and science need art :)

For my students I always say that they have to "destroy" tools, in this context they are less corrupted by tools… and they can understand how tool can work for them better.

…

…because of it's purchase price internet-photographic-gear-scientists decided that the Noctilux is a lens nobody needs.

Make up your own mind. Try one (in most western countries you can rent one), find out if it is for you, look at the pictures and then decide for yourself.

I love the Noctilux f1 (the new ASPH version does nothing for me character wise).
