rafikiphoto Posted January 9, 2016 Share #1 Posted January 9, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) When I am using my Voigtlander 15mm Heliar on my SL how do I tell the camera the focal length in use?
Advertisement Posted January 9, 2016 Posted January 9, 2016 Hi rafikiphoto, Take a look here Non-Leica lens ID?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
ramarren Posted January 9, 2016 Share #2 Posted January 9, 2016 There are no codes for the Voigtlander 15mm Heliar. The best you can do is pick a Leica lens code that's similar (presuming you're using the M Adapter T) to stuff the lens name, etc, into EXIF, and that doesn't affect the rendering poorly. rafikiphoto Posted January 10, 2016 Author Share #3 Posted January 10, 2016 That's a pity. On the Fuji X-T1 one can dial in the focal length of the lens in use.
scott kirkpatrick Posted January 10, 2016 Share #4 Posted January 10, 2016 What difference does it make? The focal length is useful in Olympus cameras to set IBIS response (does Fuji offer IBIS?), and it shows up in EXIF in most cameras, but it has no operational effect on the SL. More useful is to set the lens ID to the M lens whose processing is most like that of the non-Leica lens in use. scott
rafikiphoto Posted January 10, 2016 Author Share #5 Posted January 10, 2016 More useful is to set the lens ID to the M lens whose processing is most like that of the non-Leica lens in use. scott I would be happy to do that if I knew enough about lens characteristics to make the choice. If anybody could help in identifying a suitable candidate or tell me how to do it myself I'd be grateful. The lens is a Voigtlander 15mm Heliar III f4.5 ASPH. I will also be using a Canon FD 300mm f4L.
scott kirkpatrick Posted January 10, 2016 Share #6 Posted January 10, 2016 For the 15 Heliar, the standard suggestion is to use pre-asph 21/2.8. For a 300mm lens, there is no M lens close to it. If it happens to use the R mount, you would have options, but I don't think that works... scott

I'd just stuff the lens focal length and name in with EXIFtool when post-processing.
wlaidlaw Posted January 10, 2016 Share #8 Posted January 10, 2016 I tried the various codings with the 15 CV (V2) on my M9. I found the best overall was to code as a 28 Summicron ASPH (011010). This gave slightly better correction than any of the 21mm lenses and was perfectly satisfactory. The 15mm CV was not a great performer on the M240, with detectable Italian flag, whatever I coded it as and, as I had an 18mm SEM by that time, I was not too concerned. I got Malcolm Taylor to mill coding pits on my 15mm CV, so I can paint in whatever coding I fancy. It has sat on a shelf ever since I bought the 18 SEM and I must get round to selling it. rafikiphoto Posted January 10, 2016 Author Share #9 Posted January 10, 2016 The version III I have launched late last year has virtually eliminated the colour fringing. So far I have been very pleased with it. Thank you for the advice. I see that there is a Lightroom profile for the new version.
