Probably it is a stupid question but I can't find the answer on the forum

I bought my Leica SL/24-90mm yesterday. I always use my M8/M6 no peaking available.

I don't really know what peaking is for. This morning making pictures with the peaking on and in all different colours.

Why different colours and why peaking and does it have an advantage?

Thank you already for an answer,

I have no SL, but, for instance, if you have your peaking set to red and your subject or background is red, it will be impossible to see.

The only thing peaking does is to mark the outline of subjects of maximum edge contrast by a shimmering effect; that can help establish focus. Personally I only find it useful with lenses over 200 mm.

The EVF is so good on the SL and especially with magnification now available on the joystick for manual focus lenses, that I find peaking somewhat superfluous. It seems less accurate than the Mk.1 human eyeball to me. The only time I find it mildly useful, is that it is quicker to spot what AF is focusing on than the focus cursor, when you are using "Field Mode" AF.
