G. van Asch Posted December 30, 2015 Share #1 Posted December 30, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) Probably it is a stupid question but I can't find the answer on the forum I bought my Leica SL/24-90mm yesterday. I always use my M8/M6 no peaking available. I don't really know what peaking is for. This morning making pictures with the peaking on and in all different colours. Why different colours and why peaking and does it have an advantage? Thank you already for an answer, Gerjan van Asch
Advertisement Posted December 30, 2015 Posted December 30, 2015 Hi G. van Asch, Take a look here SL peaking. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jaapv Posted December 30, 2015 Share #2 Posted December 30, 2015 I have no SL, but, for instance, if you have your peaking set to red and your subject or background is red, it will be impossible to see. The only thing peaking does is to mark the outline of subjects of maximum edge contrast by a shimmering effect; that can help establish focus. Personally I only find it useful with lenses over 200 mm.
G. van Asch Posted December 30, 2015 Author Share #3 Posted December 30, 2015 Jaap, thank's for your answer. No more peaking for me anymore, Gerjan
Daedalus2000 Posted December 30, 2015 Share #4 Posted December 30, 2015 Jaap, thank's for your answer. No more peaking for me anymore, Gerjan Peaking is for manual focus, have you tried it with your M lenses? You may find it useful then.
wlaidlaw Posted December 30, 2015 Share #5 Posted December 30, 2015 The EVF is so good on the SL and especially with magnification now available on the joystick for manual focus lenses, that I find peaking somewhat superfluous. It seems less accurate than the Mk.1 human eyeball to me. The only time I find it mildly useful, is that it is quicker to spot what AF is focusing on than the focus cursor, when you are using "Field Mode" AF. ramarren Posted December 30, 2015 Share #6 Posted December 30, 2015 For manual focusing, peaking can be a good way to "rough in" focus quickly. It depends on the lens, the scene, the focus distance, and the lens opening as to how effective it is.

jgmb Posted December 31, 2015 Share #8 Posted December 31, 2015 Peaking is particularly useful for manual focusing while shooting video and following a moving subject.
