I always end up searching the web to figure out which model of Apple computer I bought - their model designation is useless too. I rest my case ;) .

Doesn't 'About this Mac' help?

If you try to buy more RAM the way the sellers describe the computer is by base spec and date released, so no it doesn't really. In essence there is a lot of information required to precisely show which model you have. It would be so much simpler to have MBP 2015 V.3 or something similar.
