atournas Posted December 15, 2015 Share #1 Posted December 15, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi all, The black finish of my 20-year-old M6 Classic has started rubbing off, though only around edges for now. Any idea what I should expect to see underneath? I remember some pictures of pros' much used M6's that appeared brass-colored. Paul

ShivaYash Posted December 15, 2015 Share #2 Posted December 15, 2015 I think by all accounts it will be some type of matt silver...

ShivaYash Posted December 15, 2015 Share #4 Posted December 15, 2015 Won't the bottom plate be brass... And the top cover zinc?
madNbad Posted December 15, 2015 Share #5 Posted December 15, 2015 Read at one time zinc bottom plates were tried but the hinge point was prone to breaking so the bottom plates remained brass.
pico Posted December 15, 2015 Share #6 Posted December 15, 2015 I cannot fathom why Leica deviated from brass tops and bottoms. It seems like a bean-counter got his way. No more! .
earleygallery Posted December 16, 2015 Share #7 Posted December 16, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) Zinc. But black chrome doesn't usually rub down to the base metal, it will just look like faded/grey.
michaelwj Posted December 16, 2015 Share #8 Posted December 16, 2015 I think eventually you get to Zinc - but there are a lot of layers. The base is brass, as is the rewind lever. Mine's seen a lot of use , but has no dings or dents. I put a new lens on it and it shows how grey it has become, it hardly looks black anymore. Cheers, Michael Welcome, dear visitor! What's a normal day with it? I'm struggling to envision how long it will take mine to get like this...mine doesn't even have a scratch.

I can think of a reason - their financial position was in such a state that they were only able to buy a bunch of secondhand drainpipes to melt into camera tops. (Seriously, I have a pristine M6 classic and think it is a great camera)

Kidding aside, I love it Assuming of course this is from real use. If I ever see a person taking sandpaper to a camera again I might just throw up
Fotoklaus Posted December 16, 2015 Share #13 Posted December 16, 2015 That looks like taking the leatherette of, take some sandpaper and then put the leatherette on again.... Or do you use handgloves with sandpaper? Some problems with aggressive hand persiparation?
michaelwj Posted December 16, 2015 Share #14 Posted December 16, 2015 Holy smokes....do you take pictures with it or beat up cement blocks with it???? Wow. Please fill in some details for me: how long have you had it? How do you treat it? What's a normal day with it? I'm struggling to envision how long it will take mine to get like this...mine doesn't even have a scratch. I've had it for about 3 years, and put less than 200 rolls through it in that time. Before me it was owned since new by a local wedding photographer who used shot it alongside 2 others every weekend since new until I bought it (He was slowly moving to M9s at the time). He estimated about 10 rolls every weekend went through it from 1991 to 2012. So I suppose its been well used - but also well cared for - there are no dents or scratches and it is buttery smooth. The rough wear on the front only comes up once the black chrome is gone, the coating under it seems much less tough. Who do you think you are, Lenny Kravitz! Hardly even used! Haha, do you store it in your bathtub? Kidding aside, I love it Assuming of course this is from real use. If I ever see a person taking sandpaper to a camera again I might just throw up That looks like taking the leatherette of, take some sandpaper and then put the leatherette on again.... Or do you use handgloves with sandpaper? Some problems with aggressive hand persiparation? No sandpaper - who could be bothered! I think it is most likely sweat - it is only where the camera is held that it is really bad, the top plate is just dull chrome.
