Advertisement Posted December 9, 2015 Posted December 9, 2015 Hi pico, Take a look here I have a Leica M 262 in my hands for the next week. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Bill Livingston Posted December 9, 2015 Share #22 Posted December 9, 2015 Startup time on the 262 filmed through the viewfinder. Hmmm... That's what I'm getting on my M-P in terms of startup time too. Maybe those with extended times on their 240 are using one of the other exposure modes requiring the shutter to open? Surely it can't be that simple... it has to be somethings else.... I had a little disagreement with another member on here about this a short time ago. Maybe if they see this clip they will see where I was coming from... Hope so, I don't like disagreements with people I respect.
jack-tucker Posted December 9, 2015 Share #23 Posted December 9, 2015 Hmmm... That's what I'm getting on my M-P in terms of startup time too. Regarding the time it takes till the framelines appear, I get the same with my M-P. But it still takes about a Second (or little less, I have never stopped it and won't do so) till I can actually take the picture. Means, if I keep the shutter release pressed while turning on the camera, it still takes a moment till it actually releases. On the other hand I can't remember that this has ever been the cause for me to miss a picture. (It was mentioned before in another thread and I fully agree: If you want to capture the "decisive moment" it is not a matter of being fast - and sometimes even the quite opposite - but a matter of the right moment to press the shutter) But I did miss some shots when I had to use a slow, fake branded SD card I bought while traveling. With that card it took maybe about 5 seconds to wake up. @ jim0266: Can you please check how long it takes till the shutter releases? Thanks and regards, Florian

But still takes ~1.75 secs to first shutter release and image capture.
colonel Posted December 9, 2015 Share #26 Posted December 9, 2015 Hi Colonel, did you see this video I made of the sounds? Many thanks Like your M2 It seems to me that the initial shutter run is very similar on the M-E to the M262, if fact the M-E might even be quieter, however the recock on the M262 is much quicker and lower pitch. So discreet mode probably not much in it but non-discreet mode the M262 is clearly less disruptive. Is this a good summary ?
colonel Posted December 9, 2015 Share #27 Posted December 9, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) So I had a look at the 262 now, thanks to the folk at red dot cameras, old street. The shutter is definitely quieter then the 240 and the recock is shorter and less clanky (just want to say that the 240 is fairly quiet anyhow). The knowledgeable people at the shop told me the shutter is in fact a complete redesign, for example the 240 shutter goes from side to side, whereas the 262 shutter goes top to bottom (ie vertical). They also suspect, but don't know for sure, that in the 240 shutter, because of live view, it needs an extra mechanism to open close open close the shutter. The new shutter may well have left this mechanism out, again reducing shutter components, noise and movement. Comparing it to my M-E, the total shutter sound on the 262 is only a bit noisier then the initial shutter movement in discrete mode on the M-E, obviously the M-E recock is much longer and slightly whinier. The 262 does not have a discrete mode. Therefore the M-E could be quieter if you can wait for recock in a different position later. The 262 total shutter is quieter and shorter then the 240 but not by any means silent. In terms of the finish it's very nice but somehow I had in my mind the shiny chrome of the MP which is truely beautiful. The 262 is not like that and is in fact dull. It's actually very nice but I prefer the black of the 240 and 240 M-P. The weight is definitely lighter and feels around the same as the M-E. I did make a mistake in the shop of picking up a S-E and 70mm lens and had to run out quickly before I bought one ....

jim0266 Posted December 9, 2015 Author Share #30 Posted December 9, 2015 Colonel, very interesting. FWIW, a snap of the 262 shutter. A larger version is available here.
LocalHero1953 Posted December 9, 2015 Share #31 Posted December 9, 2015 I actually had to check this on the M240, in case I was insane. Yes, the M240 also goes up and down.
colonel Posted December 9, 2015 Share #32 Posted December 9, 2015 the blade direction is the opposite of the M-E I actually had to check this on the M240, in case I was insane. Yes, the M240 also goes up and down. Well that's a turn for the books ....
Peter Kilmister Posted December 9, 2015 Share #33 Posted December 9, 2015 Side to side, as in top side to bottom side.
colonel Posted December 9, 2015 Share #34 Posted December 9, 2015 The M-E seems to be the opposite
pop Posted December 9, 2015 Share #35 Posted December 9, 2015 Depends. The shutter in my M (Typ 240) goes from left to right, but only in portrait orientation. In landscape orientation, it travels vertically. I'm too lazy to see wether it goes up or down.
Duane Pandorf Posted December 9, 2015 Share #36 Posted December 9, 2015 Someone asked about "skin" tones. While my M-E is in the shop I have a M240 loaner I've been using the past 3 months. I turned down the upgrade offer but since the M262 was announced and having photographed with the M240 for a bit I could see myself behind the "stripped" down version (M-E CMOS) camera. But anyway, here's a quick snap of my bride this past weekend with the M240 same sensor as the M262. I've created a custom color profile using the Xrite Color Checker and the DNG file was edited in LR CC. M240, 35 Lux ASPH. (pre-FLE)
tsleica Posted December 9, 2015 Share #37 Posted December 9, 2015 Which camera do you actually like better..the M-E..or the 262..?..as well as color files out of camera.. Which would you buy right now..if you had a choice that is..brand new..for a 1st time buyer..the M-E at under 4K brand new now....or.. the $5,2K.. M262?..as an entry level Leica M.. Thx for this thread..it really helps..! As.. I'm having a store hold a 262 for me for today..and another holding an M-E..this week.. Need to make a decision on this soon.. Thx for this thread..it really helps..! As.. I'm having a store hold a 262 for me for today..and another holding an M-E..this week.. Need to make a decision on this soon.. Three years ago this month when I bought my first Leica (M-E) I would have bought the M240 as it was just announced but knew from reading here and other places if you weren't on a special waiting list you weren't going to get one for a long time. In my case, I caught my better half in a "weak" moment and did not want to pass up the opportunity to have a Leica in my hands. Having said that, I love my M-E. It is what it is. In most all cases the camera far exceeds my capability but there are a few times when another stop in ISO would make a difference. Right now if I were in the same situation I was three years ago and the M-E and M242 were staring me in the face and I could have either one right this moment......I'd buy the M242. The weight reduction, LV/Video removed, ISO3200 and incredible battery life.....would be a no brainer. And if you have any doubts about why it doesn't have a gazzilian megabit sensor, 12 fps and whatever latest tech to get in your way then IMO your looking at the wrong camera company. I'd buy the M242 stick a 35mm or 50mm lens on it and have fun. Shoot the heck out of it for a few months before thinking about all the other glass you can stick on the front. Pick one lens and learn the camera inside and out. It will become one with you.
colonel Posted December 9, 2015 Share #39 Posted December 9, 2015 But anyway, here's a quick snap of my bride this past weekend with the M240 same sensor as the M262. Congratulations ! You now also have a permanent model on site
tsleica Posted December 9, 2015 Share #40 Posted December 9, 2015 The thing is..the M-E files look great online..strong color and Leica pop.. The M240..well...more tepid..and blander..to my eye.. But the 262 is more current and has the quieter shutter..w/o the recock whine.. I have a bunch of M and R glass..but don't want the extra weight..of the 240.. I bought my 1st M3 & M6 in the late 80's..still have em..but they have been laying fallow.. I want to go back to the rangefinder soon...as I'm tired of looking at the a7 and Lumix screens...except for video.. There is no perfect cam.. But the 262 may well come close as an all rounder..just for photos..
