M246 screen problem

Hello everybody here. I just join the M246 family and I am very pleased with the camera. I just found a “defect” on my machine and no idea whether other have seems nobody talk about this. When setting the ISO to 640/ 800/1000, with shutter speed 1/12s or 1/15s, no matter in “M” or “A” mode, the image shown on the camera screen becomes “foggy” and lost much contrast. If the image is read on the computer, no such problem was found. I have tried the same setting on another M246 in the dealer, exactly the same problem was found on that unit. Don’t know whether this is batch problem or all M246 are suffering this hidden problem. I am talking to Leica CS and may let you guys know what’s going on. Please share if you found this situation on your M246 too. Thank you.

the screen of camera is low resolution, and in computer you have a much more possibility to see, also if you pro--print, it it shows you exactly wats going on. i have same problem on my camera screen, but after importing in light room(DNG!) its gone. try with print pro.

Very interesting, I tested this now and I am experiencing the exact same thing. It is a clear difference between ISO 800 and 400 when shooting at 1/12 s. The screen has certainly much less contrast at ISO 800. I am going to do some more testing.

I tested again more carefully now and it is clear that I am experience the same thing as the OP and that it is only for some specific values, when testing for ISO the screen is "foggy" at 800 but not at 400 or 1600 when the shutter speed is 1/12 and when testing for shutter speed it is "foggy" for 1/12 but not 1/4 or 1/30 s when ISO is 800. Very strange behavior but not something that really bothers me because I am rarely shooting with this combination of ISO and shutter speed.

The exposure value was roughly the same for all test shoots.

Tried again. ISO 800/1/12th Normal screen. Firmware 2.0.2.5

Firmware 1.0.0.4, note that this is the new Monochrom. If my memory serves me correctly you have the first generation MM?

I think that should have some problem to generate the thumbnail. Last night when I transfer the image through the Toshiba wifi card to my iphone, I found the thumbnail shown on my iphone apps also got the same problem. But after I click for original size image, problem is gone!

Hello Jaap. I just check my 240 but no problem. Actually, you may just put on the body cover. It shoots in total darkness and will be more easy to notice the effect. One is nearly 100% black and the problem one is in deep grey something. You may try, more easy to see and judge. Effect is obvious.

Just for the sake of argument, you are using fairly long exposures for this 'test', so are you sure that by increasing the ISO you aren't simply over exposing the image, and when you import it into another programme on your PC etc. the programme used isn't doing an automatic rendering that compensates for the over exposure making the image look 'normal'?

  • 3 weeks later...

Too bad that Leica still cannot address my problem after checking my sent files, I need to contact my local distributor to demonstrate the problem again. Sorry that you could not update anything this moment.

Anyway I do believe that there are some problem for my M246 to generate the thumbnail under the mentioned setting. So tha t when u open the pics in thumbnail size no matter on the desktop computer, smartphones, or the M246 itself, you may see the problem. But when going back to normal size, everything goes back to normal no matter is DNG or jpg
