Wow...was surprised to find that Kentmere bulk 100' roll wasn't even sealed.

I finally got my roll of Kentmere bulk 100' from Adorama and didn't know if inside the box there was a second seal, so I took a chance and yes, it was in a black plastic bag that SEEMED to be sealed.

So I took out the roll and to my horror found that the black bag wasn't sealed nor was it even twist tied! I twisted it as fast as I could and figured that the first few rolls might be messed up. I didn't take it out of the bag but I'm sure that some light got in when the end of the bag untwisted what little it was.

Lesson learned. Darn.

Is Ilford HP-5+ sealed in a bag or is it packed the same way as Kentmere?

Ilford is in unsealed bags in sealed boxes. I miss the days of metal cans sealed with tape.

Being paranoid I have never taken the lid off a can other than in the darkroom, except when empty of course, and those are marked as such. Too many of those marked "MISC"

I did the exact same thing with my first 30m roll of Kentmere. I was also sure I got light on it because I unfolded the part of the bag that was folded under the roll (if that description makes sense) in a bright room. But there was no light damage at all on it which I think was because it's tightly wound on the core. I hope it'll be ok with your roll too. It's a really great film with a classic look.

The last time I bought 100' of N74+ from ORWO it came in a can sealed with tape. The film was itself in an opaque paper-ish bag, folded but not sealed. The bag did not produce any visible static discharges (like micro-Northern Lights) when handled. I have seen these when handling 400' of Double-X, which comes in a plastic bag (unsealed) in a can.

I didn't want to get into the dark bag not knowing what I needed to do to open it up. Do I need scissors? Do I need  wire cutters? Do I need to rip something open with my bare hands?
