Slow start up?

Technically it does to harm because full overwrite causes more wear than normal writes to the card, however the cards have (or should have) such an enormous write cycle capacity I doubt anyone here will be effected.

Jac,

I will be pushing up the daisies long before I have worn out any of my SD cards:p

I tend to chuck them anyway after 4 or 5 years.

I can hope that your cards last a long time, and you too.

Sorry - didn't mean to "out" you.  :o

Initially, I had very slow startup (10-12 seconds) with two Lexar UHS 2 1000x 256GB cards in place. Then I switched to a Sandisk Extreme pro UHS 1 256 GB in slot 1 and a Sandisk Extreme Pro UHS 1 128GB card in slot 2. Startup time is now 1-2 seconds, which is great considering the large size of the cards.

I'm waiting on Sandisk to release a 256 GB UHS 2 card before I try to go back to UHS 2. Lexar cards just don't seem to work very well in the SL, and my experience is that it's the opposite in the Sonys (they like Lexar better than Sandisk). But it could be that it's the UHS 2 that is slowing things down at startup and it's not the flavor of card.

No problems for me with same same spec Lexar cards but they are only 64GB. I felt using cards as big as 256GB was a bit putting ones eggs in one basket, although if you turn Storage back to ON on card setup, this would be much less of a concern. Looking at some of the folks having problems on this thread, larger cards seem to be the common factor.   The other point is that the cost per GB is higher above 64GB.

I shoot time lapse cinematography for a living, so capacity is the first criteria with speed a close second. I have since switched to two of the Sandisk 256 GB UHS 1 cards and it did not adversely affect the startup time, so I'm sticking with that configuration for the time being.

With new firmware when I switch on the camera it need 10 sec and 2 sec for wake up, do anybody else have the same problem?

Might I politely suggest you read through this thread from the beginning.

I did, I also try to follow suggestions, change both card with 2 lexar 2000x 64GB 300 mb/s,  turn of GPS and wlan but, in the same time, I upgrade the firmware. With old FW I had to wait about 7 sec for switch on and 7 for wake up, now with new FW is about 10 and 2, ok for 2 but 10 looks strange.

I use a nocti with t adapter.

For sure I made some mistake someware, in any case sorry if it looks that I didn't read your post.

Check the laser printing on the back of your Lexar cards. If they are C spec on the middle line of printing - last character, they are not fully compatible with the SL. They need to be D spec or above.

start up times are 1-2 seconds max with the Leica AF lenses attached.

start up times with manual lenses on an adapter appear to be MUCH slower .... but still in the order of 3-4 seconds

this can ONLY be a bug in the firmware as there is no electrical connection to the lens and if anything start up should be quicker than when using an AF lens

all the other variations appear appear to be card and formatting related ...... try a full erase and format with SD-Formatter and see what happens .....

My SL with M to T adapter and MF lens starts up from cold in the same time as with an AF SL lens mounted, in between 1 and 2 seconds. I bought my M to T with the SL and I know it was new stock at that time. I did wonder, since the M to T/L adapter was originally designed for the T camera, there are not two generations of M to T and it was updated on the quiet, like the SF58 flash was. So people with the later version are not getting the start up delay on the SL but for the older version, it is not coupling as well as might be hoped to the SL. Hopefully this will be something that can be sorted in a future firmware update (must be getting to be a long list by now).

I just checked my camera with Lexar 64GB 2000x UHS-II cards.  Turn-on is about 1.6s with a single card inserted (either slot), and about 2.2s with both cards inserted.  I am running firmware version 1.2.  GPS was on and W-LAN was off.  This is with the 24-90 AF lens attached.  I haven't tried it with a manual lens, but since I'm never going to focus and shoot super fast with a manual lens I wouldn't care if startup were a second or two slower.

Bonjour,

I have slow startup only if i use the second slot (testing with two cards - Lexar Pro 32 GB 300 mb/s and  Premium 16 GB 45 mb/s - in the second slot).

When this slot is empty the startup is very fast (1 second or less).

Chris.

Hello,

we had this discussion already a month ago.

I tested it then already, but cannot find the entry anymore, so cannot link to it.

I showed the trouble-free Startup/Wake-up times with my camera. So here I try to repeat:

GPS is turned off. Using a R 50 with the Leica adapter stack.

A: 1 fast card:                          In slot 1 (UHS-II slot)    "fast" Lexar 1000x 64 GB UHS-II card  :                                                       Resulting time     0.5 s

B: 2 cards (fast + slow) :          Additionally in slot 2     "slow" Kingston 128 GB UHS-I card:  (empty) :                                            Resulting time     2.5 s

C: verification, 1 fast card :      Took out the second card again, same result as at the beginning, as expected :                             Resulting time     0.5 s

So if startup time is crucial, try to work only with a single slot.

Stephan

Odd

I have always have 2x sandisk 16gb extreme pro 280 mb/s UHS II cards formatted in SD formatter in the camera ....... and turn on/wake up speed is just over a second (1.3-1.5)..... and well under a second with one card, irrespective of which slot

If speed is important I would suggest :

Use high speed UHS II cards

Use moderate capacity cards ..... high capacity cards slow things down ..... 16gb seems the optimum

Use identical cards throughout

Format FULLY in SD formatter before use

Format (Quick) in SD formatter when full

If you do the above the speed benefit of a single card over 2 will be minimal ...... and you won't lose the advantages of a second in the camera...
