Last April I chose a new M-E over a new or used M240 or used M9.  Today, I would probably choose a new M262; such is progress.

 

Yes, the M262 s thicker, but not much, but like the M9 it is now a mature platform, and the new quiet shutter is very appealing.

 

That said, back in April 2015 I chose a new M-E, and I plan to enjoy that M-E (and my original M Monochrom) until at least 2018 or later.

 

There is always something newer and better, but what we already have remains every bit as good as it was the day we bought it.

My M8 and M-E are lovely cameras and I'll not be parting with either anytime soon, but back in the Spring I was lucky enough to buy a 1935 Leica III with a 1935 50mm Elmar.  Now that really is a 'miniature camera' in the long ago sense.  Image quality is OK too!  Here are some of the results:

Umm. the weight difference is 15 grams... the 262 1/2 mm thicker. Are we dealing with the Princess on the Pea syndrome ?

 

Actually there have been some misleading figures been bandied around on the Internet. It would be wise to compare for yourself.

You were comparing the M9 and M262, which are pretty much identical in depth.

 

And I'd venture to suggest that compared with the M9, the M262 is superior in every important area, although I accept that some prefer the M9's sensor, which is a personal preference and far from universally shared.

Not comparing to the iPads      , the Point I am making the Leica  film cameras are the thinest and the lightest, since the Digital cameras came out, they only got thicker and heaver and the trend is proceeding over time, maybe Leica Need Apple to show them how to make the same Dimensions and weight as the Leica Film Cameras?

I used Leica film M's for decades and now prefer the slightly fatter digital versions by comparison.  I find that one adapts to the tools, provided they work as desired and intended.  

 

Plus, one needs to consider the system....with lenses....not just the camera.  In this regard the M still wins for me, in size, weight and overall balance.  Small, but not too small for me, unlike a lot of other modern systems.

 

BTW, have you noticed iPhones getting bigger and bigger?

Going back to your statement I chose to get a Leica M9 over a Nikon D4 over the Weight issue, Due to Nikon have their heavy 24-70mm  Lenses with a D4, my Back could not cope with that weight, I have always been a Nikon photographer since 1989 ,but this time I just had to knock back getting getting a Nikon,

I totally agree and I've done exactly the same as you. I also strongly suspect that Leica will one day be able to produce M-quality output and functionality in a smaller body, and i shall welcome that.

 

But I don't think it's reasonable to complain about the pretty small differences between the current digital Ms and the film Ms which have to house entirely different innards.

Perhaps a Leica "D-Lux" series camera is more in line with your digital camera dimensional requests?
