FeralCoton Posted November 16, 2015 Share #1 Posted November 16, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) On my safari today I noticed the shutter button itself is slightly sticky in the half press. It works fine but isn't quite as springy. I haven't spilled anything on it. Any suggestions on loosening whatever might be there? Cotton swab with a bit of rubbing alcohol maybe? Schrödinger's cat Posted November 16, 2015 Share #2 Posted November 16, 2015 First of all, I'm just thinking out loud here and have absolutely no experience in the matter. On re reading your post you mentioned safari, so if you mean that literally I guess it implies all the very fine dust associated with such things. If that's the case you might as well disregard everything from here on down due to lack of access My first choice would be professional disassembly, but here are my DIY thoughts. I am hesitant to let liquids into a switch, but just as a WAG I'd think you're on the right track. A couple of things do come to mind: I'd want something that evaporates quickly, is a non conductor, and leaves no residue. Alcohol may evaporate quickly but I believe the drug store variety includes some other components which do not. Alcohol might also adversely effect any plastic in the switch. If I were going to do this at all, I think I would use Eclipse, which certainly evaporates quickly without residue. Another choice might be visiting a store selling electronic components and using one of the products for cleaning switch contacts, although I believe they also contain some sort of lubricant. I suppose the liquid will wick into the workings anyway, but I might consider doing this with the switch facing downward.
jdlaing Posted November 16, 2015 Share #3 Posted November 16, 2015 My advice would be to NOT put any liquid that will conduct electricity anywhere near those parts.
Peter Kilmister Posted November 16, 2015 Share #4 Posted November 16, 2015 What danger of a short circuit would there be if you remove the battery?
Schrödinger's cat Posted November 16, 2015 Share #5 Posted November 16, 2015 What danger of a short circuit would there be if you remove the battery? I would suspect none. I suppose you could potentially use something with a conductive residue and cause a short.

That would probably remove all lubricant. I would just blow it out with a bulb blower.

colint544 Posted November 16, 2015 Share #8 Posted November 16, 2015 For what it's worth, I've noticed that the shutter release on my mk1 M Monochrom becomes sticky if I haven't used it in a while. I can press it all the way down, and it remains there for a moment, before popping back up. Annoying, to say the least, on a camera I paid £6000 for when it was new. My 1966 M2, and 1975 M5 suffer no such issue. I've found that simply pressing the button and loosing off a dozen frames or so seems to cure the stickiness.
