If you are referring to the new edition it is black anodised aluminium with some glossy components and knurling meant to echo the Dupont pens in the collection. I don't see any mention of black paint which I believe would require a brass bodied version of this lens.

Search for this on ebay:

70th Independence Anniversary black paint Leica MP 0.72 w/35mm f/1.4 50mm f/0.95

They might buy the lens, but I suspect the other 'accessories' would be considered rather cheap and tacky for their purposes!

They already own a Noctilux f/0.95 - may be more than one to go on their different camera bodies.

I kid you not - such people almost certainly don't frequent this Forum - but they exist - I've met some of them.

Who smokes here?

The reason I ask is that when I was a student, and even when I practised in London (late 1980s), people smoked in the office, meetings - hell, we even smoked in the Law Library. Now, we never see it. Small groups huddled around the corners of some buildings, but otherwise I never see smoking at all.

Smoking is prohibited on the Forum.

Someone needs to fire the marketing department.
No wonder people need to tape over their red dots. Who on earth wants to run around with what is perceived to be an expensive fashion statement?
Some people do, but most real photographer's don't (I suspect).

You raise an interesting point. If Leica go too far down the fashion accessory route they will begin to undermine their long established and hard fought reputation for engineering and optical excellence, even amongst those for whom the fashion stuff has thus far seemed an irrelevance. I think most of us can separate out the camera stuff and these rather cynical exercises in trying to milk the brand but I think Leica do need to be careful how they manage the brand. Taken in isolation these trinkets (IMO the £110 key ring is in "jumping the shark" territory – it is so irredeemably naff) and various special editions can be forgiven as money spinners but they seem to be coming thick and fast lately and, taken together, is suggestive of a management slightly at sea at the moment looking at ways to bring in revenue. Personally, I'm not sure it's such a good thing that, immediately after a major product launch, the Leica website is leading with a new glossy F0.95 set of baubles and a lens with the aperture numbers and other engravings left blank.

Indeed. I was using my R3 last Sunday, taking photos in Whitehall after the remembrance service, and one guy approached me as he had spotted my Leica - he said that I must know a lot about photography and asked if I'd take a photo for him!

I'm sure we'd all hate it if the general perception was 'wealthy mug with too much money and bad taste' instead of 'good photographer' when people spot you with a Leica.

(edit - obviously using an R3 is a sign that I'm clearly not wealthy, but I do have excellent taste!).

Exactly! I would, at least... But the problem for me is that it seems that THIS is the crowd that Leica's marketing department tries to speak to.

I get that the obscenely priced trinkets are marketing, but can someone help me understand what's up with the Noctilux? Also marketing? What... itself?

It is simply for the collectors, and we have no sense of the scope of that market. Worry not - it is heathy for Leica.

I wouldn't overrate this topic. In my oppinion Leica needs to do such marketing moves in a globalized world. We as photographers don't need these products. We only need good lens and camera. So my "standard" Noctilux is totally enough for me :-) BUT Leica needs to make such things to secure their future and to have possibility to invest this money of special edtions in new development and technologies. So let the targeted customers buy this lens for who the marketing departement made this idea and everything is okay. for the others take it easy and wait for the next technology step which is financed by such special editions.

I don't fault Leica for trying to make a little extra money.  For the pens and lighter, all they've likely done is license, for a fee, their brand, and agreed to sell them in their store.  I don't know what's up with the Noctilux, but have no doubt it will sell.

Leica is not a fashion brand, but they are a luxury brand, and luxury brands are doing very, very well selling things to very, very rich people. It's okay.  As money is fungible, every dollar made selling doodads is a dollar that helps the company fund new SLs, new Qs, and eventually new Ms.

It's not for us weirdos who spend spare time on a forum, for Godsake, reading and writing about our favorite camera company. But it's not all that strange to do what they're doing in their partnership with DuPont -- Porsche makes (or licenses their names for) sunglasses -- and it's not the end of the brand ridiculousness.  There will be new outrages to roll our eyes at - and so long as it helps them to keep coming out with great new cameras and lenses, it'll be ok

Our posts crossed the wire at the same time. Yep, you got it.

Actually, I think this is right.

These products come from the marketing department, and have zero impact on what Customer Services do.  I don't begrudge Leica making a variant of the Noctilux for those intrigued by such things.  I just found the idea a little ... bizarre.  Looking at the ST Dupont website, I see they've released a 007 Spectre set, and more power to them.

It does no harm for Leica to be associated with such products, I guess.
