andybarton Posted May 28, 2007 Share #1 Posted May 28, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Neither Vuescan nor Nikon's software can see my scanner. It was fine last time I used it. These things seem to have an incredibly short life-span. My Minolta one previously only lasted a couple of years, and it's not like I am a heavy user... I have tried a System Restart, and changing USB ports (which work fine with other peripherals) but to no avail. I have also changed USB leads and computers. Looks like a trip back to Nikon-land... Try going into:- Right Click "My Computer" & choose "Properties" From "Hardware" Tab, choose "Device Manager" Under "USB Device Controllers" you should see the Nikon Scanner. If you do not see it, then check other USB devices appear (if not then your USB controller on the PC has a problem). If other devices appear, then the Nikon has a problem with its USB controller. If everything is OK here, but you do not see it through the software, then try uninstalling the Nikon scanner; go into the registry and make sure all references to Nikon are deleted; before re-installing the scanner software. If you are on a Mac - then my Unix skills (non-existant) do not help in determining if the USB controller is actually seeing the device and something else is the problem - sorry. Sandokan Posted May 28, 2007 Share #8 Posted May 28, 2007 Oops - I couldnt remember from other discussions which religeon you were - and of course I always confuse you and Steve Unsworth as you are both north of the Watford Gap and south of Hadrians Wall Anyway, I know how to fix PC problems but not Unix or Mac ones - guess where the majority of sh** happens and where the money can be earned to fix them... I can fix SCSI problems on a Mac, but that was the only troubleshooting I ever had to do. I guess you should be able to go into the command prompt and show devices as it is running FreeBSD but have no idea which command to use... pierovitch Posted May 29, 2007 Share #10 Posted May 29, 2007 Andy Try using the DMR and a good macrolens to dupe slides and negatives. It takes a little playing with the transfer curves in photoshop and a bit of USM tailored to the lens you use, but the results can capture a the full resolution of a Fujichrome or Kodachrome easily with lees grain than a scanner if you use a well diffused light source. We had one with the same symptoms go down in our art department a few years ago. I don't remember the cause, but only that is was at Nikon USA repair for many, many months. One more thing you might try is to unplug all other USB devices from the computer. I have to do this with my Minolta when scanning. I had a similar problem and called Sonolta.
