Okay here is another comparison between a S2 and a Monochrom. I shot the pair of endangered Hawaiian Monk seals this morning with my S2/70 mm. Kinda a grey day and I got to the beach a little late so I missed two males fighting. This is a female taking a nap in the foreground and a male (named K31) closer to the water where he can block any new males from coming close to her. The second shot is a young seal coming in for a nap. Monochrom with 50 Summicron (orange filter).

The S2 files are smoother but it was easier to get the shot with the Monochrom.

mmmh, can´t exactly agree... the MM is smaller, lighter, quicker than the S... there are situations the MM can easily manage, and the S not...

now I have the M246, which is much better (because of the shutter, high ISO, live view), and therefore even less redundant

What has size got to do with it................and quicker, are you kidding me. Have you ever tried/used/SEEN a Leica S

Now, now Neil. If I'm not mistaken, you work on an oil rig. That means you are a big, strong, burly kind of Scotsman. The rest of us mere mortals get a little tired after carrying a S after mile five or so.

All kidding aside, I like to walk a few miles down the beach most mornings and while the weight (and the sweaty strap) of the S2 is a slight concern, more bothersome is the notice factor. I'm close to invisible with my MM yet always get noticed with the S2. On the other hand, sweet young things tend to perk up and assume a pose for the S2. Hmm, maybe I should take it with me more often...

I do own a Leica S, Neil, and do work with it on a daily basis.

Of course, the S is lighter and quicker than a 4x5 (my equipment for decades, BTW), and heavier and slower than a Leica M, no doubt.

I am, like you, very happy with the S, but facts are facts...

Now you've done it Neil, I'm dragging my S2 to the beach. I ran into my old friend K30. She's a 15 year old lady now. When I first met her she was a healthy 7 year old with a scar on her neck from a net. Today she is showing scars from a few encounters with tiger sharks and it looks like she is pregnant. I first photographed her with my M8/90 Elmarit M. Today was S2/70.

Oh and I did look for a sweet young thing but only ran into elderly women. It's off season and the senior crowd flies in on the cheep. But old Bob found some youngins.

Hay Printmaker........I know off topic but can you resend me the link to your B&W and Color printing setup in CS6

Im now using the P807 and up to now very very happy with it

Tomorrow I am going to try some B&W and wondering whether to use the Premium Luster or the Epson textured fine art paper?

Hi Neil,

Hope you didn't mind me pulling your leg.

I went on your contact me page of your website and left you a note. But here is how I'm processing S files.

1. Open in Lightroom and then use the edit in PS setting to get the 16 bit file

2. Go to Camera Raw where I may pump the vibrance to darken the blue in the sky

3. Use a layermask to convert to B&W (so I can play with the filters)

4. When I have an overall look I like, I flatten and then go back to Camera Raw

5. I'll use the shadow slider to get the detail and then the black slider to create shadow contrast

6. I'll do the same with the highlights and white sliders to create highlight contrast

7. Add -5-9 in post crop vignette and maybe 20-30 in sharpening if the image needs

8. Proof on my Epson SC800 using Hot Press Natural with the Epson ABW set to warm

9. Fine tune the image based on the proof

I use Premium Luster and Epson Exhibition Fiber for my color images. When images exceed 16x24 inches, I have the woman who bought my studio print them on one of the 44 inch Epsons. She is always happy to oblige in exchange for a little consulting time. I'm using Epson's HPN combined with Epson's AWB "warm" because I really like a slight warmth to my images. As a kid I was a big fan of Agfa's Portriga papers and later I printed with platinum and palladium coatings on natural papers. These settings get me close to that look.

How long did you have your Monochrom? Only a few weeks AFAIR......

john - with no intention of getting rid of his Monochrom

I had my MM for ~2 years and it was fantastic. I've had my S for 3 months and the S files are 10 times better to work with and produce better B&W pictures IMOO

You should just go ahead and sell the MM and be done with it....... You know you want to

No equivalent for the extreme wides, fast 21mm-75mm, small size, high ISO (until I get an 007), unobtrusiveness. I shoot differently with the MM, it can only be B&W rather than converting something which may not work in colour....

john

You won't sleep at night until you do it, so just seen the MM and be done with it.....you know thats the smart thing t do.

Leica S rocks
