M8 in perspective

Yes it shines...rangefinder focussing, old and new classic lenses can be used and its just fun to use.

BUT......

The WB is not reliable, , it's noisy as hell compared to all other digi and manual 35mm cameras...it hangs up in the most important situations, you forget sometimes to put the IR filter on the lens, the high ISO quality is crap,on half of the lenses that you own it back focuses...this is the worst...

but sometimes it works , and when it works it's perfect, it's the best, the images are exactly what you always dreamed of.....

And then it dies, suddenly without warning, it is dead..and you know that you bought the hype...you knew it was coming and didn't want to beleive it..SDS.

So after sending it back you take out the 5D or the old unused 350D with L lenses and you shoot..it works, it works and it works, and it is good.

You miss it badly but deep down, deep down, you know that you bought if for fun and the name of Leica..and then it's OK because you know the images you make with the canon gear will be just as good, just as good, just as good.

As much as I love my M8, I have to agree on the backfocus remark, my 35 'lux pre asph is ok, but the 50 'lux asph, and especially the 75 'lux are terrible... (the 75 is back in solms for finetuning, I'll let you know how it behaves afterwards...)

I'll take it on...

I shoot RAW all the time and couldn't care less about how the auto WB performs (which in my four months with the camera function well 99 out of 100 frames).

While noisier than a film M, in every real world shooting situation I've been in the noise of the shutter has not been a problem. It is in no way noisier than "all other digi and manual 35mm cameras"; it seems to be middle of the road as far as this is concerned. Compared to a horde of people with Canon 1 series blazing away next to me, I'm nearly silent.

Forgetting to put on the IR filter is your problem not the camera's. Do you complain when you forget to put on a polarizer and the reflections you were trying to get rid of didn't do so? OK, yes the M8 is overly sensitive to IR, however most of us shooting in color with it probably leave the filter on all the time and don't give it a second thought. At least I do...

In my experience, when properly exposed both ISO 1250 and 2500 make perfectly acceptable prints. Are they as clean as a 5D in that range? No, but I haven't found this to be a serious limitation of the camera.

At least from my perspective, the M8 is hardly the worst. I've enjoyed it from the first image. Are there some things that could be better? Yes, but 1) no one is saying that they'll never be fixed, and 2) what camera is perfect?

WB is OK, although it really doesn't matter as I shoot DNG and can correct in post.

It isn't as noisy as my Nikon D200. Yes it is louder then film M's but not that much, IMHO. I've done tests with a M3 and the M8 mounted on a tripod and being in front of the camera. I hear the click of the shutter on both.

Image noise is crap on film when pushed to 1600-3200 too. What is your point.

None of my lenses backfocus on the M8. I've tested them all.

Mine never died, Never had any glitches. I sent mine back because of brass colored spots (brass particles) that must be under the coverglass of the sensor because I could not clean them off and over time it seems there are more and more of them.

I didn't buy the hype. I bought the camera I've wanted since I went to digital. When first looking for a digital camera the first search I did was for Leica.

Sent my M8 in on Thursday. Still haven't taken the D200 out of the bag. I've been shooting my M3.

Yes I bought it for fun. That is what photography is for me, FUN. And it's more fun when you're using a camera type you've always liked, a Leica M.

Never owned a Canon SLR (digital or film) but I seriously doubt any Canon or Nikon is as good as the M8. I do know that the files from the D200 are not as good as the files from the M8. Not as good, not as good not as good.

I tend to agree with Andy.

While luckily my M8 never failed, it did back/frontfocusses with different lenses and admittedly it's MUCH noisier than my old M6.

I also know my D200 can make images which is 95% the M8's quality, providing I put fine Nikkor lenses in front of it.

They don't have quite the bokeh or the subtle microcontrast and DR is also slightly narrower, but they are very good nonetheless and considering they are mostly in perfect focus and framing when M8 images aren't, well... I sometimes wondering why I still love my M8 :D

Because, at least for me, it's only a matter of love with this camera... oh, wait a minute... I guess this is the answer indeed.

Because it's only a matter of love also with photography ;)

mmmmmmm...

at least I had expected a bit of 'sorry your M8 died' stuff,

ah well.......I see that noone wants to own up to the cameras weaknesses--and yes it is my fault to forget the IR FILTER sometimes (only have four of em)...

Man!.....I am real surprised with this ' never needed any other camera syndrome'...why the defense..just speaking from the heart,,,,chill out gents!

The only perspective I gather from this thread is you have a lemon of a camera, either send it back for replacement or refund.

The camera rarely makes any image better, it's more to the degree of influence that the photographer brings to bare on the image that makes it better or worse.

I have with one exception AWB, none of the issues you describe. Obviously my perspective is at odds with yours. Sorry to hear your troubles.

I don't believe anyone said they didn't need any other camera. At least I didn't.

Ok, sorry your M8 died.

I guess it was because your note didn't read like you were looking for sympathy. It read like a rant. Issues that have been discussed at great length already, so it wasn't clear what you were adding.

Nothing personal.

I really don't understand why people who used to shoot with DSLRs suddenly state that they don't need any other camera than the M8...

I do wish my D200 had the M8 sensor and my Nikon lenses had the quality of my 28 Summicron, 50 Asph or 90 Apo, particularly wide open.

But image quality isn't the only bread and butter.

There are much more things a DSLR can do that the M8 can't, than the opposite.

Btw Andy, I'm sorry your M8 died... is it an early model or a new one ?

Did it show some malfunctions before or did it just suddenly die ?
