A miller Posted October 22, 2015 Share #2 Posted October 22, 2015 I would have liked to see a frontal and closer up; but this is, as they say, "lovely"

Louis Posted October 23, 2015 Author Share #4 Posted October 23, 2015 I would have liked to see a frontal and closer up; but this is, as they say, "lovely" Thank you, Adam.... Closer was impossible. I was passing in the street and this couple was sitting in the restaurant's terrace. I liked the cows in the background and I had to shoot very fast before they noticed me! A miller Posted October 23, 2015 Share #7 Posted October 23, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) Thank you, Adam.... Closer was impossible. I was passing in the street and this couple was sitting in the restaurant's terrace. I liked the cows in the background and I had to shoot very fast before they noticed me! why is it wrong that they notice you? I think the cows are secondary to the cute dog tucked away in the guy's jacket right up next to the food. I would have worked that scene. If you took a couple of steps closer and even if he would have "noticed" you there is a chance that he would have looked away again (assuming you played it right). You just have to get into the scene to get the most out of it. 9.9 times out of ten no one will bite you

Louis Posted October 23, 2015 Author Share #10 Posted October 23, 2015 Delightful. Too bad Ripley's larval alien is emerging from the man's torso. Thanks very much, Stuart. lately, everywhere I go, there is an "Alien" merging from somewhere. I believe we are being invaded silently!...

Iduna Posted October 30, 2015 Share #14 Posted October 30, 2015 Louis, yes, there is a great potential in the scene. The humour is very subtle here I think Adam is right if the focus was on the dog and the food. This is a different story. You wanted the background as well, so your story is more complicated and revelas its meaning at the second glance. I personally also feel better keeping a distance but with training I think one could approach closer and I think the problem to embarass people is only in one's own mind. This particular fear is in most cases probably only an obstacle for oneself.
Louis Posted October 30, 2015 Author Share #15 Posted October 30, 2015 Tom, thank you very much. My subject ( or, "story") in this shot was not a man sitting in a restaurant with his little dog coming out from his jacket. This is why I did not agree with Adam. My "subject" was a man eating steak while cows were watching him! ... I was hoping that my title would give the clue! I also wish the IQ of the shot was better. To give you the situation, I was passing in the street when I noticed this couple in a restaurant' terrace, in front of that truck that was giving that wonderful background. I shot as quick as possible without setting my manual lens, etc. I did it quick because I did not want the truck to disappear, and I did not want the man turning to me with a smile (cheese) maybe! That would have spoiled my idea completely!

That is why I like your shot very much. Do not worry about the IQ. These are not stillife shots....but life as it is and quick as it is

I was hoping that my title would give the clue! Louis, my dear friend, it is by no means obvious, or even evident, to me that the man was eating steak, or on a quick first glance even beef. He only has one bite of his main meal left and it was totally lost on me to make the connection between that last bite and the cows. To me, the elements of this scene that I immediately found interesting and would want to have framed is the guy with the pathetic look on his face with the cheesy hat and glasses holding very snugly (even caressing in a security blanket kind of way) his dog directly in his lap, and the dog being unusually close to his plate of food, as if the dog was doing the eating and not him. Nothing to do with the cows, from my vantage point. Just my two cents.

If we all agreed on the same things, the world would be soooo boring! And, this is why "photography" is so interesting!
