Teething problems with an M6

Lost my first roll as it was't wound on correctly, then loaded  the second roll incorrectly - over the ISO reader instead of under.  Doh...

Is that likely to have done any damage? The camera came from Japan with German and Japanese manuals, and the PDF English version that I've downloaded seems a little vague.  Can anyone enlighten me about the role of the spring in the middle of the tulip shaped spool?

Pity about the 36 shots that I thought were taken on a roll of 100Tmax!

The spring helps keep the film from slipping into the tulip too far, it pushes it back.  If you notice you have to open the rear door and push the film up a bit to engage the teeth, then close the door.  This is the spring in the tulip pushing it back down.

See here.

Thanks for the useful input 'too old to care' :>)  That first video is a tad brutal!

Just rang Melbourne's camera clinic, who employ Leica trained technicians. They think that image is unlikely, but gave a me some step to diagnose with a test film.  They've earned my business should I need them...

The reader contacts are on a strip of the body just ahead of the sprockets. Sounds like he tried to thread the leader tongue between that place and the back door...

if you didn't pull the leader out enough to reach all the way to the spool, and hadn't seen it done correctly, I could see people do that.

Oh, I see.  Yeah when I first got my M6 I was so paranoid about loading the film wrong because I had heard so many stories of people thinking they had exposed a whole roll and it was loaded wrong.  I watched like every youtube video but it turns out it's not that complicated.  Do it correctly once and after that it's actually pretty fast.  Much better than the old system with the spool in my opinion.

I think the spring in the tulip also has to do with the frame counter.  When you open the baseplate the frame counter automatically resets and I believe this is due to the spring's tension being release.  You can actually kind of feel it when you open the base plate if you've exposed some frames.

You may be right, but see here.   Read to the end.  http://www.rangefinderforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=85791

Hi Pjay,

There are quite a few of us in and around Melbourne on the forum. If you have troubles with it, I'm sure you could get some local help in person. It makes life a lot easier.

Cheers,

Michael

Thanks for the kind offer Michael, but I'm in rural Queensland ;>)

Spot on, TomB_tx - I usually have more mechanical sympathy than that, as I did notice that the hinged back panel was harder to close than it should be.

I shot a test roll on Saturday, and will wait to get the negatives and scans to check that all is well.  Somehow I think that the Monochrom will get more use!
