Video?

I'm going to every church in Lucca, Italy today and light as many candles as I can.  Why?  ....Because the new SL has an HDMI, 10 bit output.  It has internal time code.  Is it just time stamp or SMPTE accurate?  We'll find out soon enough.

Hopefully, the SL will have a version of V-log for precise color adjustments in Post.

If the SL puts out a solid codec at internal 4K or exports a 10 bit signal to an external recorder/monitor,

like Shogun or Sound Device Pix, we have a winner.

Oh... that "expensive"  24 to 90 zoom lens that costs $5k....Try similar video lenses from Cooke or Fuji...

They run around $20k and up.  Even the Leica  90 to 280 zoom at $10 or $12k would be a bargain.

Granted, the Leica zooms all zoom in the wrong direction.  So, I'll just have relearn some life long habits. I hope Leica makes a PL to T adapter because the film/video world is built on the PL mount.

We've been using Panasonic GH4s and Sony 7Rs for lots of videos, but the new SL really gets me

excited about raising the quality level with an easy to use, brilliant viewfinder, universal lens mount

capability, and 10bit output.

Ciao,  Sully

Check out Leica's webpage. They announced a PL to L mount adapter for the SL camera. Don't know though when it will be available or how much it will cost. The SL camera can be set via camera menu to use V-log for output.

The motion is super solid. It has a flat log profile which is supposedly worked from the Panasonic GH4. The 10 bit 4K over HDMI via Shogun etc. is superb and the Leica Prime-C adapter is incredible. We can also use S Lenses too, which the motion community have been dreaming about for years, unable to have access to. I'm just happy to use my M primes on a Leica platform in 4K. This is the most surprising design from Leica which knocks it out of the park, IMO. I'm still mostly speechless they've done this.

Unfortunately I couldn't take it with me but it should arrive in a few days. While the next issue of LFI (finished last week) covers the basics of the SL system, the following issue will cover video.

I asked this in another post and it was overlooked:

Regarding video a few questions:

1- Can video be shot using the Full Frame sensor? I read that all video is APC sensor size, please confirm.

2- Do we have full manual control of shutter/iris during video recording?

3- Do we have full manual focus?

4- do we have manual audio levels during recording (not just before)?

5- Can we shoot 1080 at 24fps? Full frame?

6- When recording log, can we apply a LUT to the monitor?

7- do we have simultaneous video output will recording? is it a clean display? what are the specs of the output?

8- will the existing M-PL Adapter work on the SL?

Here is a little that I have found so far that may help:

4K is Super 35, up to 10bit 4:2:2 externally or 4:2:0 8 bit internally. I'm happy with this for PL lenses and no line skipping, so less moire and alaising and rolling shutter.

1080 120fps is Full Frame - This is what was posted by Andreas during the live coverage of the launch.

You will be able to apply a LUT if using something like the Shogun and get the benefit of 10bit too. Not sure about internal, good question, I would think most of these sort of your requests could be added by firmware anyway. But i'm guessing it's more likely we'll be using it rigged for 10bit HDMI recording so not a huge issue.

I think the existing PL-M mount will work in conjunction with a T-M adapter.

I'm not sure about that but I have read speculation the a look up table may already be there.  Wouldn't it be great.  I think a lot of folks are missing who this camera is aimed at.  Certainly not the Sony A7rxx crowd.  I am looking forward to seeing a real videographer review this. Post t if you find it first please.

edit: In my post above (#9) I meant to say "any" mount.

i am also looking at this from a video standpoint....does anyone have an idea about DR in V-log?

leica almost got it right with the 2 SD card slots....almost....why is the second slot neutered? ....sandisk just came out with new Sd cards able to do 280/250mb R/W speeds....2 slots combined with the maestro II...why not internal 10bit even if it is striped over 2 cards? i don't mind external 7Q or shogun but that internal option would have put leica over anything from sony or canon.....even price-wise....

  • 2 weeks later...

hmmm....i find the log image pretty amazing, yes the curve that needs to be applied is pretty extreme but panasonic's V-log is a little bit like that? i find the internal non log video pretty atrocious, so my experience with the files from the SL are pretty much the opposite....i also find "a little more then 10 stops DR" just plain wrong....the SL does not have sony A7 DR numbers but it definitely is better then canon which is about 12 stops....

i got interested in the SL for video from a very short post by the makers of the Odyssey 7Q+ who got to play a bit and were very pleasantly surprised with the clean video (v-log) output....i haven't been able to test it myself but from the few clips i have shot myself i don't see anything wrong with the SL, contrary, i think it looks quite a bit better then sony A7 internal....

i also noticed that the article mentions MP4 and MOV to be the same (or at least the same quality)....isn't pro res a quicktime compression and actually MOV? afaik MP4 is inferior to MOV? i don't expect there to be a big difference between internal MP4 and MOV files but i don't think it is the same compression? also: MOV files are really easy to grade and play with on pretty much any mac?
