Steve Spencer Posted January 1, 2016 Share #181 Â Posted January 1, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) I see hummingbirds almost every day where I live, and I don't even have a feeder. I think your reply shows that you pay very little attention to the discussion, as I was replying to Jeff about moving hummingbirds. I was paying attention to the discussion. The shots of humming birds could easily have been made of the hummingbirds when they were hovering in flight. That you did not recognize that and called the shots lucky suggested either a lack of knowledge about hummingbirds or an arrogant condescension about another photographer. I was trying to give you the benefit of the doubt that you might just not have had much experience around hummingbirds. I guess the real source of you calling the shots lucky was arrogant condescension. Perhaps there is a pattern here in your responses? I don't want to draw that conclusion to quickly, however. jaapv Posted January 2, 2016 Share #184 Â Posted January 2, 2016 The SL601 can fit the Apo-Telyt 560/5.6 (pic) or earlier (and now much cheaper) Telyt 560/6.8 or 560/5.6 i guess, but also the Telyt-S 800/6.3Â if you can find one. Not a tiny lens though (6.8 kg). Â Apo-Telyt-R-560-5.6_web.jpg Not really cheap either...

Perhaps there is a pattern here in your responses? I don't want to draw that conclusion to quickly, however. Â Â If you really were paying attention, you would have noticed that I said that I - as anyone - have a hard time getting fast moving subjects in focus with MF lenses. So how can this be condescension ? Â I understand people who shoot MF for passion, challenge, brand loyalty, or money. As a matter of fact, I shot a long time with a MF tele until till I could afford a good AF one, and I have several good shots of wildlife captured with MF lenses. Â But what you don't know is all the shots I (and all other mortals) missed because of no AF. And saying that with proper training one can be as good with MF as with an AF lens, is like saying that with proper training you can be as fast as a calculator to compute square roots of arbitrary numbers. Â Leica MF lenses are fantastic, but for some tasks, AF lenses are much better. It is amazing how much some people in this forum are deluded.
Ai_Print Posted January 2, 2016 Share #187  Posted January 2, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration)  is that to take good wildlife photos you need to understand their movements and habits and get close.  It's actually much, much more than that.  Truly great wildlife photography is immersive, gives context about the animal, shows it's habitat. But most photo enthusiasts just don't get this and instead, think that a great wildlife shot is what we typically see day in, day out as being the cliche 400mm++ mug shots of some animal smack dab in the middle of the frame....no context, no environment and certainly none of the mastery that Frans Lanting, Jim Brandenburg, Nick Nichols or Paul Nicklen have shown with aplomb.  There is nothing on this earth as boring to me as a mug shot of an animal with a long lens. Note also that I am not saying at all that AF isn't useful for some types of wildlife photography. What I am saying, however, is that it isn't necessary for all types and it may well be some people's preference to use MF. Â I actually went the opposite way that you did with the wildlife I shoot. I used to use AF and I have switched to using MF (both were 400mm f/5.6 lenses). For the type of wildlife photography I do, I prefer the MF lens. It is fine with me if other people have other preferences, but I do find it seems condescending when people call my preferences deluded.

jmahto Posted January 30, 2016 Share #197 Â Posted January 30, 2016 You need to pay more attention....I for one never said a word about Leica (or any other brand or specific gear) being the best for any particular subject. Â Some people can make wonderful pics with very little, while others make crap with the most expensive gear on the planet. Â Â And that's why it's particularly galling to read your put-downs on Doug Herr's work, and attribute his results to luck, as if you knew him. Â Maybe YOU need a 3000mm lens to get REALLY good bird pics....not everyone else might. Â Your horse is for your course. Â Â I've used a lot of gear in my life (from 35mm to 8x10), with a broad range of manufacturers....and there's virtually no correlation between the true quality (or lack thereof) of my pictures and the brand used.....it's always been about a hell of lot more than that, mostly residing in me. Â Nobody cares what gear you use....nor should you care about, or criticize others, for their chosen tools or methods.....that's ignorance. Â It's about the results. Thanks for pointing that out. I fixed it. Even as a perfectionist, sometimes I miss that one nagging typo in 9000+ words.  Yes, I am very much a native english speaker, and aim to have the most in-depth reviews of Leica cameras available. I also try to provide a wide variety of sample images taken in different lighting scenarios, with varying subject matter, so readers can get a better feel for real-world performance.  Thanks for taking the time to read.  Leica SL (Typ 601) Review: A Professional Mirrorless Camera
G. van Asch Posted January 30, 2016 Share #199  Posted January 30, 2016 I read the review by David Farkcas which is great. I am not a natural english speaker but it is clear and accurate.
