Q's First Trip

Just came back from two weeks in Europe. Munich, Rhine River Cruise and Amsterdam. Posted the images in a gallery on my SmugMug account: msohio.smugmug.com.

I took a Nikon D750 with the 24mm-120mm f/4 VR, a 300mm f/4 VR and the Q. Most of the posted exterior images are with the Nikon. Most of the interior were with the Q. Everything was hand held. Auto ISO on the Nikon was at 6400 and the Q at 3200.

I used bracketing with the Q for most the interior shots at a one stop spread. I have it set one half stop under all the time as I find shadows come up fine with LR6. To combine the images I used the HDR setting in LR, not my fancier HDR software.

I found the Q was great. Love the 28mm length and the sharpness at f/1.7 is amazing. I think all my interior brackets were at 1/500 or faster. When I was using the Q as a street camera, I did not bracket but did use AF not a manual preset.

I had the Q in my vest inner pocket all the time with a wrist strap. When I did not use the vest, like dinner, I just hand carried it. Could not have been easier. Had several people ask me what kind of camera it was as I have black gaffer's tape over the red logo dot. One man was shocked as he had a Leica M on his shoulder and did not know they made a full frame. This is my first Leica and I like it a lot. Great output with good sharpness an IQ. Nice size for a 28mm walk about body. ...Mike

If you went on a long trip, would you only take the Q? Thanks.

Thanks Fastcar888.   That is a very pertinent question!  I look forward to reading the responses.

I'm off to India soon.  Have choice of M9 + lenses, 21mm to 90mm. Last trip with this combo was very successful except when auto focus and high ISO would have made some additional shots possible.

So ....  Can my new Q save weight and deliver results?

the following image taken in a station very early in the morning wouldn't be a problem with the Q, but I did use a 75mm a few times.

Loved looking at your photos.  My wife and I have looked at Viking and we are just waiting to get some free time to plan a trip.  I think for a trip as this I could get by using the Q only.  In the past it would have been the DF with a couple of primes.

Thank you. I cannot adequately describe how relevant this question is to me as well. Although I have traveled quite extensively in my life, it has always been with a camera system and multiple lenses (Leica, Nikon, etc).  I do not want to bother with lugging the weight,

and bulk any longer.  Having used a FF SLR camera, I won't go back to any less than full-frame.

In 2016 my wife and  I plan to travel around this beautiful globe for a month.  My dilemma is: Do I purchase the Q and just take that one camera, or look at other FF options?  The pluses for me is that the FF 28mm Q integrates very well with the background on a trip. Moreover, I genuinely enjoy the feel and intuitivness  of the Leica Q (and Leica in general). As to the negatives, I like head shots that are not necessarily the strength of the 28mm fixed lens. Hopefully, we all will receive meaningful feedback. Good luck!

fastcar888....as an ex-racer I wonder about your name.....

If I was not looking for really great photo image opportunities, yes the Q would be enough. Have to foot focus a lot in a town, however. The sharpness and IQ are all one could ask for. I took the D750 with the 24mm-120mm as my second body. If I did it again, I'd take the D750 with the 85 f/1.8. Not heavy at all and no long lens to worry about. My other prime choice would be the 105mm /2.8 micro.

I guess I look at it that I really want to get great images and that requires something out in the 70mm-120mm area on some occassions. There was no image I took with the Q was not happy with.

Given the distance from the ship to the castles, the 28mm would have given me a good landscape photo, but a longer lens let me get the castle itself. The ones in my gallery of the castles are cropped very little at all. The largest crop produced a 11MB JPEG file. Now they were taken with the 300mm f/4 VR at 1/1000 and ISO 400.

Bottom line, for me if it had to be one body and one lens, I'd take the D750 and the 24mm-120mm.

This is great to read. I can't afford both the Nikon D750 and Q, so have been debating which to get. I love the simplicity of the Q as I've got an original Fuji X100. Might get the D750 with the 24-120mm and get the next upgrade on the X100, or save for the Q? Tough choices but great to see your images.

I am not as advanced photographically as many of you here, but I can tell you my experience in regards to "can this be my only travel camera?" Similar to TipTop I have been using an APS-C Nikon (D70) with a 24-120 zoom since the D70 first came out. Traveled all over the world with it (including lugging it strapped to my chest to Everest Base Camp!.) Also on several bike tours. Sure I got great pictures sometimes but I found it hard to get myself to carry on some of my more arduous trips (like EBC). A friend on a bike trip had a Nikon D800 and f2.8 zoom. Needless to say, he didn't RIDE with it, it stayed in the support van and came out at lunch stops. I picked it up and was appalled at the weight. I had a bike trip through Corsica and Sardinia in September and really wanted a camera that would work for me and I'd be willing to carry on the bike. So, I bought the Q in August with some trepidation - particularly due to the fixed 28mm focal length. After I got used to this focal length I decided to bring it with me as my only camera, leaving the Nikon at home. Didn't regret it - got great pictures and was ok with keeping it with me all the time. Sure, some shots would have been possible if I had a telephoto but it really didn't matter in the big picture because I ended up with so many good shots - and many I wouldn't have gotten with the Nikon. So no, it can't do everything that a complete SLR outfit will do but it does an awful lot of things very well. So, it has satisfied me as my only travel camera.

I've just retired my M9-P and am only going with the Q.

I think it simply comes down to the type of photography you do and how light you want to travel. I travel light and I like people shots mostly.

If I do want landscape shots then the 28mm is fine for that at full res. With people it is always more about capturing the subject and reaction time than the mega pixels IMHO.

I only ever really produce prints at A3 so never feel a loss of quality or that they fall short.

The irony is that had Leica produced a full frame compact of the quality of the Q 4 years ago, I would not have bought the M9.

Agree with Rapierwitman about the type of photography you do.

I am a casual photographer (street, architecture, interior, landscape, etc) and have almost always travel with one body + one prime since the 90's. So I am very comfortable travelling with just the Q.

Traveling with a light kit with a single lens was my reason to buy the Q.  The Q will be my first Leica after wanting one for many years but not wanting to pay for a M series body and lens, or choose one of the previous compact cameras.  I have a full DSLR and set of lenses but really look forward to traveling light, shooting silently, having incredible IQ and the Leica "look".  I have a short trip coming up and will take the Q.

Just spent the evening in Madrid with the Q for a wander through the streets. If the colours and focus points look half as good as they do on the LCD then I'm more than happy.

AF in variable light is fantastic. Lock on is quick, colours accurate and temperature good even across multiple light sources. I even found myself chimping and having a second look at the subject of the shot I'd just taken to compare.

Playing around with the exposure metering and AFS modes has been an interesting experience. Oddly enough I'm finding multipoint AF and spot metering really effective. It seems to put you right on the money for subject focus as long as you are reasonably careful hunting the light. I still find myself moving around the subject like I used to with the M.

ISO's rarely above 640 and mostly 100-400. It's 10pm here. Result!

AF assist off and the lack of shutter noise means you're not even there :-)

I enjoyed looking at your images. Recognized amongst many the bronze baboon from Heidelberg :-)

I bought the Q to complement my M9. Two camera's ready to shoot, one 28mm the other 50mm. And if I need a 90mm then ...

M9 + 50 summicron + 90 macro + Q is still way lighter than my 5DMIII ++

Looking forward to New Year in Iceland :-)

(for that trip I might bring my Super Elmar 18mm too)
