jonnyboy Posted October 17, 2015 Share #1 Â Posted October 17, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) I finally decided to spend buy a decent 50mm for my M6. I thought I would get a Summicron as I have Voigtlander and some old lenses so far.I found a Summicron 50mm (S/N3506721) the seller doesn't seems to know much about the lens (and I dont know how to identify the version) he just stated it's from 1990. Which Summicron version would it be, 3 or 4?He said there is no scratches, fungus or haze overall good conditions and the price is 800EUR more or less. Advice anyone? Â Thanks! Guest Posted October 17, 2015 Share #2  Posted October 17, 2015 ...  Take a torch shining through the Summicron and look at the other end. Then you should see if the lens is actually free of scratches, fungus and haze. If it is clean inside and otherwise undamaged best, enjoy it after the optical quality was checked with several test shots.  The Summicron was produced about 1990 and is a type 4. http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-wiki.en/index.php/50mm_f/2_Summicron-M  http://www.kenrockwell.com/leica/50mm-summicron-comparison-table.htm  Welcome, dear visitor! luigi bertolotti Posted October 17, 2015 Share #3  Posted October 17, 2015 V4 has basically 2 differences over the later version : - Focus tab (a feature I personally like) - Lens hood not built-in (marginal disadvantage, imho)  it can be 6 bit coded (a later version can be factory coded... but on your M6 this does not count) ; also, the later version was normally available also in chrome, while the V4 in chrome are rather uncommon.  So, think of the above 2 details to make your choice... apart, of course, closely inspecting the glass and the mechanical operation: the asked price is in the normal range for such lens. tobey bilek Posted October 17, 2015 Share #4 Â Posted October 17, 2015 The smaller the light the better, Â i.e. pen light, keychain light. Â Black background. Â repeat for both ends. Â Haze or fog inside to any degree will degrade image, Â first with funky contrast, Â then sharpness if it real bad.
james.liam Posted October 17, 2015 Share #5 Â Posted October 17, 2015 Or see how much it costs from a known dealer who will stand by the sale, with a limited warranty. By the serial number, it was manufactured about 1990, or 25 years ago. May need a CLA. Â Caveat emptor.
