I have experienced the same situation of standing completely still and having a deer stare at me while frozen in her tracks allowing me to get a perfect shot with my Nikon F3 and 200mm lens. I've never been able to figure out how hunters pull the trigger to instantly end their lives. I'm not being judgmental, just saying I can't do it. When I awoke to my surprise a herd of elk were gazing all around me. They continued to graze until I moved a little to get my camera.
