James Changstein Posted October 12, 2015 Share #1  Posted October 12, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) I inherited a Summarit 5cm f/1.5 in m-mount and it has worked flawlessly on my Sony a7II but has two issues  1 - it won't focus to infinity on Leica M2, Zeiss Ikon ZM or the Sony a7II - 2 - the front barrel also rotates 'accidentally' when I change the f-stop  please advise if there it's something I can remedy at home or should I send it for a professional CLA? Any recommendation for someone highly skilled and reasonable in the USA or Canada?  Thanks for your input -  cheers,

rickp13 Posted October 12, 2015 Share #2  Posted October 12, 2015 hello james  silly question, but have you turned the focus ring until it has clicked firmly into the infinity lock. i'm assuming there is an infinity lock because both my summarits and current xenon had/have one.  have you tried other ltm/m adapters in case the thickness is part of the problem?  greetings from hamburg rick

The same lens won't focus on either the M2, Zeiss Ikon and a7II - where as other m-mount lenses will focus to infinity on the same cameras..
luigi bertolotti Posted October 12, 2015 Share #4  Posted October 12, 2015 Maybe it was cleaned and badly reassembled... the behavior of the front barrel can be a sign of... years ago I had a similar issue on a collapsible Summicron in BM,,, the glass was VERY clear,,,, even too much for an old lens... and didn't focus correctly ; send it to a good lab : Summarit is a fine lens to use and worths the cost. fiftyonepointsix Posted October 13, 2015 Share #5 Â Posted October 13, 2015 I have disassembled a couple of these before, and it's design is "unusual"... Â There is a set screw that is hidden in the barrel that prevents the front section from rotating. I have pictures "somewhere" on a computer at home... I need to upload them, the site that they were on is long gone. Â As far as the focus being off: is it front-focusing at all distances, or just not reaching to infinity? The latter- the helical has been incorrectly assembled. If it is just off at all distances, sounds like the optics are not screwed in all the way. Â Send me a PM, I will try to revive the thread on Leicaplace.com. I need to upload the pictures- a software change mangled the links. Â Unless you have done these types of DIY repairs before, I would send the lens to Youxin Ye.
fiftyonepointsix Posted October 13, 2015 Share #6  Posted October 13, 2015 I uploaded the disassembly pictures to flickr and replaced the links:  https://www.leicaplace.com/threads/84/  With the Summarit: Three set screws hold the optics module in place, and a "hole" is hidden under a cover screw. You must undo the set screws, the cover cap, and place something to hold the mechanism in place to align the aperture index and then tighten the set screws. It is possible that without the set screws that the optics module is slightly out of place, meaning it will not focus to infinity. It is also possible that the front section is not in place, or that the rear elements are out of place. A lot can go wrong when not being careful with this lens.  Set_Screw_Access by fiftyonepointsix, on Flickr  This image shows a screwdriver holding the module in place. The one of the three set screws is seen to the right of the screwdriver. See the thread above for more photos. (not taken with a Leica)
luigi bertolotti Posted October 14, 2015 Share #7 Â Posted October 14, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) Mistakes in diassembly / clean / reassembly can result in misfocus even into much simpler items... I had a someway funny experience last year with a Summaron 35... fiftyonepointsix Posted October 16, 2015 Share #8 Â Posted October 16, 2015 I've seen misthreaded helicals, 3 elements inserted backwards into a Rigid Summicron, Loose elements, missing shims, and even lens groups from the wrong lens stuck into a lens just to make it look complete.
