MAC OSX 10.11, anybody updated yet?

I think Apple is taking the graphics market for granted.  The MacPro 2013 is already dated.  No Thunderbolt monitor update; no 4K monitor, no 5K monitor.  iMac users are seeing some progress.  Apple is world's largest capitalized company, yet they seem unable to work the whole product line at one time.  Dell and HP just keep bringing out new products across all their lines.

Its hard to call Adobe lazy when they have achieved an absolute monopoly on professional graphics software for images (raster and vector graphics), print and movies.  Both Microsoft and Apple continually fiddle with their operating systems.  Adobe has to deal with new betas weekly from both OS houses.  All the while users expect ancient versions of Adobe software to continue working on out of date desktop computers, without the users paying for the service.

Apple does continue to reach higher and higher levels of arrogance.  It is really hard to listen to Tim Cook during the Web casts.

I just upgraded and everything works fine. Capture one 8.3....no problems. It feels snappier than Yosimite, but I'm on a new machine. I just got a dated 6 core Mac Pro ;) with an Eizo cg277... I can't get over how fast it is and how nice the display is.

Photoshop loads in a couple seconds and also quits completely in the same amount of time.

Hi,

I made the update to El Capitan on my 2014 iMAC.

LR5.7 works fine, but I do use panorama and HDR options, so I cannot judge on this.

The MS Office 2011 package was however not working properly after the update, but meanwhile Microsoft has  put an update online, and now it seems to be ok.

I have the solution, install the programs on new computer, disconnect from internet.   Use something else to surf.

In deference to programers,  it is hard to look at all possible problems before release.   I just made an email sub account for my wife who needed one.   I used the same method I used a decade back which was the last time.  Account was established,  I opened it, welcome messages appeared.   Looked great.   Then she gave the address to her employer.

Three days later it would not work.   I spent 3 hours on phone with SBC and I was able to finally able to open a new account with the same address as the old one really did not exist even though I opened it last week and got welcome messages.  There is a totally new procedure to make a sub account.  The rep wrote up a request for program change to block one path.

no issues with Aperture 3.6 (other than need to turn off On-screen proofing).

Thank you, this seems to have fixed a problem I had when I double-clicked a photo to edit it, after a few seconds it would switch to the next image.........

I also have a problem with Apple Mail when going from Yosemite to El Capitan, in that all the neat sub-folders that I created to store emails from various people was not present in Mail after the update! 3,500 mails, you can imagine how stressed I was at the thought of them being lost! However, I also use Email Archiver, so I do have the mails in PDF format. However since then I have found the mails are intact but I had to manually copy them into place. There is a switch from Mail V2 to V3 and I think mine got messed up in that process.

El Capitan seems to be working like a charm - hard to notice much difference, except that it does seems to be significantly faster.

Two issues, though, have raised their ugly heads:

(1)  MS Office 365 (2016) for Mac - a shocker.  It is completely unstable.  Fortunately, I have Office 2011 still on my machines, so will use that until MS gets its act together.

(2)  for some reason, Acrobat (the CC 2015 version) has shat itself.  Don't know why, don't know what to do.  When I open a pdf, Acrobat opens in full screen mode, with a dialogue box in the middle of the screen that is indecipherable - it looks like the screen resolution has changed itself).  There's a large X in the top right corner of the dialogue box, but no matter how often I try to click on it, nothing happens.

So just so I understand, Office 2011 is stable on El C? Thank you.

  • 2 weeks later...

Only thing relevant in present context I've noticed is that Lenstagger plugin for LR doesn't work for me under El Capitan. A solution has been suggested here (scroll down to the last few posts, by me and Joe Colson - who has fixed it on his machine).

I'd be interested to know if anyone else here who uses Lenstagger has had problems with El Capitan

But Adobe is lazy, not Lenstagger.

I don't think Adobe can be held responsible for the working or non-working of 3rd party plugins. There are significant problems with the latest iterations of LR, but the Lenstagger issue is probably not of their making, as it was reported in the tome between the launch of El Capitan and the subsequent of LR 6.2

Would still like to hear of others' experience with El Capitan and Lenstagger...

Half your luck.  It won't work for me, and Phase One have said that it is not compatible.  They expect a new release soon.  The issue lies with using Open CL from what I gather.  Their forum is alive with people who, like me, have no luck from 8.3.

In that case disable OpenCL temporarily.

Yes.  I converted.  It was the typical Microsoft disaster.  Not in the photo editing area, but there were significant problems with Microsoft Office.  First, Outlook stopped working. So I was forced to upgrade Office to 2016.  I am on subscription, so it didn't cost anything, but Office is fully developed as far as my needs go so I didn't want to bother.  That is when the problems really began.

In fact, technical support knew about the problem and my impression is that lots of Mac users ran into trouble.  The problem is that the keychain hung, and you couldn't get out of it.  I don't know if you know what you are doing, but their solution was to delete the keychain entries that pertained to the earlier Microsoft Office.  I would call support rather than try it yourself so you don't mess other stuff up.

I've seen no problems on my system with OS X v10.11 or 10.11.1. I run a fairly minimal system and use mostly Apple apps in addition to LR and a couple of small imaging apps (Flare mostly), TextWrangler, and FileMaker Pro. I still run Photoshop CS5.1 occasionally, as well as the latest version of VueScan.

Two problems I know about but that haven't affected me are:

  • LR 6.2/6.2.1 is a disaster that Adobe is going to fix in a new revision; i'll stick with 6.1.1 until that is taken care of, it does everything I need.
  • The Olympus raw processor and firmware updater are known to be broken and will be fixed with an update when they release the v4 firmware for the E-M1.

That's about it for me.
