I love the close up feature of the Leica Q but must admit that there are times when it would be good to get that little bit closer for some more magnifation.

I just happened to have a Raynox 250 laying round so decided to test it on the Q.

All you need it a step down ring (49mm to 43mm) and the Raynox screws directly to the lens. This makes it quite a compact unit.

The screen coverage is (Left to right side of the screen):

145mm - Standard Q in Macro mode

100mm - Raynox used with Q lens in normal mode

80mm - Raynox used with Q in macro mode

There is pincushioning with the Raynox especially with the Q in Macro mode. Normal mode is much better. Keep your subjects centered and they are fine.

There is vignetting with the Raynox as you are stepping down from 49mm to 43mm.

Overall I am very impressed with the results. I am even using the old SF 24 flash with this setup as well in dark places and I am getting some very pleasing result.

The Raynox 250 and the step down ring now have a place in my kit.

Small flower & used the SF24 flash. Cropped.

Interesting effect using the SF24 flash. Cropped. Check out the "pod" on the right at 3:00 o'clock. It is actually a tiny spider. Perfect ambush position.

Full size pic showing vignetting. Violet the size of a thumb nail.

I use this

But I really want to try an achromatic doublet so I've ordered 2 elpro vib 5x and will stack them.

There's also this high end option, if I'm not happy with the elpro's I'll try one.

Wow. You guys are amazing. I’ve done a fair amount of macro work with the Q and I love it. The big issue is not being able to get as close as I want or said another way, not enough magnification. These add on lenses certainly will help albeit with a reduction in DOF, which is simple physics. I plan to order one and try it soon.

I started a macro thread. Please consider posting your macro images there and hopefully it spurs others to jump in.

Just received my Kood 49-43mm step-down ring (princely sum of £4.99).  First quick test with the Raynox DCR-150, Q in Macro mode, f5.6, 1/60sec, ISO 1250, hand-held, cropped to remove the vignette.  Quite pleased!   :)

(The DCR-150 was a 'left-over' from when I part-exchanged my X-Vario for the Q two years ago).
