M240 dark frames

I very occasionally find that the camera records a single completely black frame.  Maybe 1 out of a couple of hundred.  It doesn't seem to follow any pattern, I don't shoot very fast, lens cap off, happens with all memory cards, fresh battery, all lenses.

Any thoughts.

I posted a thread on this a while back, I am currently on mobile and can't locate it immediately, but I think the thread name was "pitch black photos"

I found it.  Thanx.  I've got about 9 months of warranty left, so I think I'll just see what happens.

I'm assuming it had to be sent to Germany, is that correct?

Actually, after having posted the response, something else just occurred to me.  I think that it's "possible" that each time I had the dark frame I also had the EVF attached.

Apologies for resurrecting this old thread, but it occurred to me that someone might possibly benefit from what, to me at least, is additional information.

I can now state with some confidence, at least in the case of my own malfunctions, that this is an instance of user error on my part.

I find that if I am somewhat less than deliberate when pressing the shutter button that I occasionally depress it just barely to the point where the shutter will release, but no farther.  Having done this I immediately just barely raise my finger enough to ready the camera for another exposure, and then immediately make a second exposure.  It's more like an indecisive use of the shutter button.

This will cause the second exposure to be completely black.  While I can't duplicate this malfunction on demand, I have verified the circumstances with sufficient frequency that I'm convinced it's my own error and not a camera problem.

Ten yard penalty.

Indecisive use of shutter button.

Repeat fourth down.

I get it too sometimes, this 'flag on the play' is about it (also happens on M246, more on that body if anything.)

The best way I could describe it is that the shutter goes 'slop' and I have a horrible feeling and a blank frame, but it only seems to happen once every few hundred times.

Definitely aligned with indecisive shutter button pressing (but how else to capture the indecisive moment?)

I don't like it, it doesn't fill me with confidence about the shutter itself.

When you are tought to dispense hand grenandes the instructor stands in front of you and presents the grenade to you and teaches you to hold it with the spoon (release lever) against your thumb facing your chest instead of facing away from you with the spoon against the remaining four fingers. This method is preferred to eliminate "milking" or gently squeezing and releasing your fingers on the grenade and inadvertently allowing the spoon to release and the fuse to fire exploding the grenade in your hand and blowing your fool ass head off, or worse, blowing the head off your friends standing next to you.

I tell this story to introduce the term "milking". I learned way back when that a shutter button can be "milked" inadvertently instead of deliberately pressed. It can also be pressed past the necessary point to release the cocked shutter.

Leica, I believe, has a more superior shutter and release mechanism than the majority of manufacturers but the methods to release that shutter should be practiced. It's easy to lose concentration while capturing an image and either press it farther than necessary or not really far enough, in my opinion.

Hi, I also had the dreaded Black Frame of death... The Black Frame DNG files were about 5MB in size instead of the normal 28 (or so) MB. So I sent the camera back to Leica where they diagnosed a shutter fault and so replaced the shutter.

I was also having this happen on my 240 but I realized it was the soft release I have on the camera, some how the camera gets switched on in my bag and will rattle off anywhere from 10-20 blank frames while I'm moving about. One time I had something like 80+, I had to laugh but at the same time I was trying to figure out a way to keep the camera from switching itself on in my bag.
