hey guys I was hoping to get some info on what users are doing when they use Zeiss ZM lenses on digital M rangefinders.  I have a M-P 240 and I shoot exclusively zeiss lenses, mostly for $ reasons, but also since i have had great results with them.

My question is, what do you guys do in regard to sensor/lens profile i.e. lens detection.  I have been thus far just choosing the equivalent Leica length/aperture, but I recently got the new Zeiss 1.4 35 and there are several 35LUX presets in manual lens detection...   Which one should i use?   Has anyone tested the waters to see which works best?

Here is my ZM lineup should anyone have any experience with manual lens detection and these lenses:

Zeiss Distagon 35mm f1.4

Zeiss Biogon 35mm f2

Zeiss Sonnar 50mm f1.5

Any help/advice is much appreciated, thanks

D

I've used the 35mm f/2.8 Biogon-C and the 35mm f/2 Biogon on the Leica M 240. The latter I code manually as the Elmarit-M 28mm f/2.8 (11809) and the former as the pre-ASPH Summicron 35mm f/2 v4 (11310). According to this link http://lavidaleica.com/content/leica-lens-codes you'll want manually code your Sonnar as if it was a Summilux-M 50mm f/1.4 ASPH (11891). Not sure about the Diastagon but maybe you'll want to use the code for the 35mm Summilux f/1.4  ASPH (11874).

I just sold my 35/2 and 50/1.5 recently and I don't use any lens profile for any of my ZM except the 25/2.8.

is there a specific reason why? Or do you think it doesn't matter?  Sensor doesn't need any calibration for newer lenses, mostly older ones??

Yes, it does not matter. As it is, coding mainly corrects vigetting anyway. At 35 mm and longer the corrections range from virtually nil to zero. The only function of the coding for longer lenses is to get the lens info into EXIF.

The only lens that exhibits color shading is the ZM 25, for which I use the 11809 profile. The 35/1.4 and 35/2.8 show only very minor shading, and only in some circumstances, so I don't bother with it. The 35/2 and 50+ lenses do not require any corrections.

I use the Coder Kit from Match Technical for all my Zeiss lenses (I have 4).

You can manually set them in the 240, but it is easier to code them with a stencil and a pen.

All the newer Zeiss lenses have the flange cut so that any coding doesn't rub off.

Edward, how do you like the 35 2.8 on the M240? I've heard the contrast can be excessive but I haven't seen that many photos taken with it.

I think it's the most contrasty of all 3 ZM but not excessively so. The rendering is smoother than the 35/2, more in line with the 35/1.4. Basically if I don't need 1.4, I will grab the c biogon every time. One thing that annoys me a bit is the very tiny focusing ring. It's difficult to grab and to find by touch, unlike other ZM. But the lens is so small so I don't think the focusing ring could have been any larger.

Why are they so lazy with providing LR lens corrections?

I don't know.  The only non-Leica lens corrections that LR offer are for the ZM 35mm 1.4 & the recently introduced Voightlander 15mm v3 of this lens.  Shame really as there are many Zeiss & Voightlander lenses still in production & widely used.

In saying that, DxO only offer corrections for about 5 Leica lenses for the M240 & no profiles for any of the others.
