piran Posted September 13, 2015 Share #2 Posted September 13, 2015 A good read, thank you. Agreed entirely re: batteries (5). My first outing used all (3) I had and I wasn't even 'trying'. For what I did, compared with my 1DsIII, I probably would not have even bothered to recharge when I got back home. I can take well over 1200 exposures (~22MB RAW) in a day easily with the Canon. Yes, the Leica Q is very discreet and darned useful in semi-intimate shoots (!) but walking about with a pocket full of lithium cells takes the shine off. piran Posted September 14, 2015 Share #5 Posted September 14, 2015 The EVF/LCD each use similar amounts of power, so composing with either is THE battery draw. I haven't yet got used to where the battery level symbol is ever shown, it never impacted on me at all. As you say "the camera often dies all of a sudden", yes, it's a PITA. Was obliged to change battery on one occasion because I could see a picture 'forming' before me but the camera was 'dead'. Wasn't sure if the Q had frozen to black or the battery had died unexpectedly. Granted none of my tranche of three batteries have been conditioned. I need to carry around double that (six)... at least:~/ Have a 3rd party 12v DC charger JIC but I have to get Audi to toggle the car's internal network setting so the vehicle socket stays charging in my absence. My thoughts would include a modification of the pointless 'delete' button into a dedicated hardware 'on' button for the rear screen to over-ride existing firmware option settings to switch off the touch/review screen. That way I get to choose exactly WHEN the rear screen manually fires up whether by composing or manual reviewing. Meanwhile wretched thing stays off reliably. Hope Leica firmware programmers read this:-) The touch screen gets or is going active on me. Must be touching something? Every time I looked I found the rear screen pointlessly powered. My hands are big - suitable for 1DsIII/70-200 f2.8 L all day long - so 'just holding' the Q is not yet resolved! I always have my whichever camera in my hand so I need to find a way to hold it without involving the rear screen burning all the time. I need to use the rear screen to compose/shoot because my glasses don't fully get on with the EVF unfortunately. I've modified my Canon by removing the viewfinder eyecup rubber ring and I can compose all day through that optical viewfinder... No such luck with the Q and it's such a wonderful camera too. I'm curious did you try being more discreet by moving through your wedding guests holding just the Q as opposed to the usual bundle of bags, straps and gear what-have-you? If you did was there the problem my wife usually encounters and that people just walk in front or otherwise get in the way? I don't have that problem as the size of the Canon gear just grants me 'access' or its narrow FOV just pokes over their interposing shoulders and when the machine gun clatter of its shutter releases going off around their ear makes them almost literally jump out of the way. I'm using the thumbs plus device purchased for my M9. It makes a big difference to the handling of the Q and avoids the accidental touching of the rear screen. It covers the rear button but I've discovered that putting a small amount of pressure on the Thumbs Plus device is enough to toggle through the crop options. It would also work if the button has been reprogrammed. Presumably you are keeping your camera switched on but sleeping, and at times inadvertently waking it up by touching the shutter release or rear screen. Unavoidable I suspect! Not sure the Q was designed to be a wedding camera but it does do a darn good job of it -- think the cameraman is more to be congratulated than the camera. Unavoidable I suspect! Sleeping yes, touching shutter release no. Waking the camera by touching the shutter release on the way up to my face is 2nd nature for me - automatic even. It's the touch screen to my way of thinking, may also occasionally be one the five LH buttons. Big hands... my right hand palm spreads over the screen when I change from strap in hand, finger on the trigger, instantly ready to lens down fingers over the top, palm over screen and thumb around the bottom. That way I can stride through or in amongst a crowd and keep the camera safe in my hand along with dust or rain away from the permanently uncapped but hooded lens. Oh for a hardware button over-ride 'on-button' for the touch screen - to compose/preview on demand and/or manually;~) Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

sturkel Posted September 15, 2015 Share #12 Posted September 15, 2015 I suspect that what was thought to be a dead battery, was the camera hanging up. I have seen this twice already, and ended up having to power down and up again. There is some sequence of operation, while in aperture mode and switching to and from the EVF that seems to cause this. During my next event I am going to try a radio for triggering my room strobes and try using the Q during some formal dance sets. I like the 28 FOV as it looks to be right for capturing the room. Simply put: does the Q make you TOO inconspicuous (at wedding parties)? Sorry for the slow reply! I love to be inconspicuous, and have not yet had any problems getting shots because of it. I only ever have the fuji (on a spyder holster on my hip) and the Leica over my shoulder when I shoot. All other gear is in a bag close with backup kit etc in. Sometimes people walk infront of me, but I like to use that to frame my images. The way I shoot, I would much prefer to be seen as a guest as I find the images are much more natural :-) Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...
