I have a question about using the Konica Minolta Dimage Scan Elite 5400 II and Vuescan.

When I start Vuescan it says "take the film holder out and push the "calibrate" button."

And if I do, it goes through the 0-100% calibration routine over and over.

I'm not sure what its supposed to be doing or if it's hanging in a loop or if it's working correctly, I never let it go; I've always stopped it after about 4 times through the routine assuming that it was just stuck.

Anyone have this happen?

I'm on a Macbook Pro with El Cap software.

I haven't come across that. I turn the scanner on, then open VueScan, then insert the loaded film holder, and when it is ready, push Preview. (Yosemite on a MBP).

Hmm, I wonder if there is a setting that I have set that you don't.

I'll take a look. In any case, it seems like calibration isn't necessary, it scans fine and the results look great without it.

I am having exactly the same problem as described above. I am using El Capitan. The two replies which state they do not have the problem are from Yosemite users. Did any one resolve this issue with El Capitan or Later OS X version? Does this scanner work with Silverfish and El Cap or Later system?

The first thing to do is to check that the Minolta 5400 II is recognised by your computer. On a Mac this is done as follows: 'About This Mac' in the Apple menu, then click on 'System Report': in the 'USB Devices' section, you should see the scanner appear with its name, connected to a USB 3.1 port, when it is turned on. If the scanner does not appear, try changing the USB port on your computer and if the 5400 II still does not appear, change the cable (the cable that came with the 5400 II was inadequate: I only got mine recognised by the computer by using the cable from my Dual Scan IV, which is supposedly an inferior model).
As for the rest, you are told to switch on the scanner before launching the software. Try the opposite instead. Once you have launched VueScan with the scanner still off, you need to go to the Preferences tab and first uncheck the Default options, then the Warn on not ready and Warn on no scanner boxes, all after selecting None in Disable scanners and mDNS in Network scanners. It is usually the automatic scanner calibration startup that freezes VueScan. Then switch on your 5400 II and select it from the sources in the Input tab. Try scanning (there's a lot to be said about the settings, but that's another story). If the colours seem too fancy, or if you get a vague colour bar for example, ask VueScan to calibrate the scanner (Scanner menu => Calibrate). This operation, if done after starting VueScan, should not normally block anything.
Please let me know if this solves your problem.

"Better late than never"

Geoffrey Chaucer appears to have been the first person to have put the proverb into print, in The Canterbury Tales – The Yeoman’s Prologue and Tale, circa 1386: "For bet than never is late". [Better than never is late.]

Perhaps Yoda was modelled on Chaucer?
