sml_photo Posted August 18, 2015 Share #1 Posted August 18, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) Back in the "olden days," I used yellow, red, and orange filters on my M4 for B&W. I see that Leica is now making colored filters...I believe they're for the Monochromes? That made me wonder if people use these filters on their M240's, etc. or just make adjustments to the images in post processing to try to get the same effect? Jeff Thanks, Jeff. I did look. But my question is more with regard to the use of filters with the M240 and I didn't see much.
Jeff S Posted August 18, 2015 Share #4 Posted August 18, 2015 Sorry, missed that distinction. I would never use color filters on my M240. The inconvenience alone would be a deterrent (been there, done that with film), but more importantly, one gains far more control in PP through use of color channels for b/w. Not only can one decide on effects after the fact, but changes to each color channel can be made independently...and simultaneously...if one desires. In fact, this is one of the factors that caused me to pass on the Monochrom(s) and stick with the M240, especially given that I don't shoot high ISO or print huge. As I recall, there are some earlier discussions related to the M9 and use of color filters...same concept. Jeff
sml_photo Posted August 18, 2015 Author Share #5 Posted August 18, 2015 Thanks, Jeff. That's actually what I had thought. Appreciate your response!
kdriceman Posted August 19, 2015 Share #6 Posted August 19, 2015 What Jeff said... Plus you can lose 1, 2, sometimes 3+ stops by putting a filter on.

sml_photo Posted August 19, 2015 Author Share #8 Posted August 19, 2015 The internal, software based color filters on the M240 are pretty good. Apparently so! I've had no issues. Quite the contrary. Just wondering about some "old" technology to go with the new.
sml_photo Posted August 19, 2015 Author Share #9 Posted August 19, 2015 What Jeff said... Plus you can lose 1, 2, sometimes 3+ stops by putting a filter on. Yes, that's true. But, that wouldn't bother me for the most part. Sometimes, during the day, I feel like I could use a ND filter.
algrove Posted August 19, 2015 Share #10 Posted August 19, 2015 What you are bringing up was putting colored filters on when using B&W film in a camera and not when using color film in the old days. Likewise you would not put those filters on a color camera today, but only use them on a B&W camera like the Monochrom.
jaapv Posted August 19, 2015 Share #11 Posted August 19, 2015 Yes but printing colour film in B&W was not very successful, as opposed to B&W conversions in digital. I think this is a comparison that cannot hold.
Joshua Lowe Posted August 23, 2015 Share #12 Posted August 23, 2015 Apparently so! I've had no issues. Quite the contrary. Just wondering about some "old" technology to go with the new. I spent yesterday shooting in DNG+JPG with the JPG mode set to B&W with the in-camera yellow filter applied. I was really impressed with the output and to be honest I'm struggling to get the same pleasing aesthetic from the DNGs in Lightroom. Leica really did a good job with those software filters.
