Agent M10 Posted August 15, 2015 Share #1 Posted August 15, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) On a blog post where he's testing the 100mm Summicron, there is a picture of him using the lens without a hood. I've seen some other pictures where he is using a hood using the S while shooting landscapes. Any thoughts about using the S with or without the hoods? Just curious about others' experiences. gpwhite Posted August 15, 2015 Share #2 Posted August 15, 2015 I do not have a lot of experience with the 100 S yet, but I have used it without the hood. No problems yet... in fact, I have not found any "defects" in the images I have shot so far, so long as I MF. The front element is recessed so far into the lens barrel that it seems the hood is only really necessary in very strong light at an oblique angle to the optical axis. Full disclosure: I am really an M shooter, so the S lenses hoods seem gigantic to me, almost like Otus apparatus I have seen on line. The recent Leica fire sale lured me into the 24 S and 100 S, both fantastic, so I seeing how it goes without using lens shades on either. Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

Dougg Posted August 17, 2015 Share #4 Posted August 17, 2015 The stock square hoods on some S lenses seem to add visual bulk. Yeah, I know the camera + lens is not so subtle anyway, but there's something about the big square plastic hoods that bothers me! I do like hoods in general for protecting the lens physically as well as optically. The stock round hood for the 100mm is ok with me so far. I may look into a shorter one... For the 70mm I prefer the short round metal S&W 82mm aftermarket hood. This will vignette on the 35mm lens, so there I use a B+W wide-angle 82mm hood, not quite as slim and sleek as the S&W but still better looking I think than the stock plastic one. They have saved me on several occasions when I banged into a wall or droped the camera lens first. Each time the lens hood absorbed the shock and on one occasion, cracked but the camera and lens were fine. I would urge you to have some respect for these plastic Quasimodos !!!!
