Reconditioned Digital Leica: Pros & Cons?

Does anyone here have any experience with buying a reconditioned Leica digital?

I've bought reconditioned computers from Apple with absolutely no problem (they're essentially new but much less expensive).

I'm in the market for a Digilux 3 and noticed that the refurb D3s run $500 less but I don't know if it's a good deal.

One of the things I worry about is a shorter warranty from Leica since it is refurbished. Is this true? I couldn't find a conclusive answer anywhere on-line.

If anyone has any suggestions or experience, I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks in advance.

Ivan,

The D3's only been on sale for 7 months so I'm surprised that refurbished ones are available so soon.

I'd expect the conditions of the warranty to depend on whether it was refurbished by an authorised Leica dealer. I'd strongly advise asking Leica directly about the warranty to avoid potential problems.

HTH,

Pete.

Have you spoke to the seller to check them out? Are they a regular reputable high street outlet or a dogy outfit? I bought my M8 from a reputable dealer and it was classed as 'ex-demo' but looked as if it had never been out of the box. Like pre-registered cars and motorbikes - a way to improve sales figues for a month ending, etc.

Most refurbished goods are when a buyer decides they don't want it anymore because they changed their mind or couldn't figure out how to use it, and returns it for a refund. In this case refurbished means testing, cleaning, repackaging and reselling.

Good bargains can be had from a good seller.

It is indeed a reputable dealer - it's a camera shop that has a good reseller rating. The problem is, they're online and on the East Coast of the U.S. (I'm on the West).

Some of the information on other sites says that a reconditioned Leica only carries a 90-day warranty even though it has been refurbished by Leica techs.

They're closed for the next five days - it's Memorial Day weekend here in the States.

There are actually about three different resellers with reconditioned gear.

I've put in emails to each of them asking the same question, but haven't heard anything back yet.

I know it's very common to buy used and reconditioned M bodies and lenses, but I don't know if the same rules apply to the new digital gear.
