ShivaYash Posted July 27, 2015 Share #1 Posted July 27, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have not posted in some time, to hello everyone. I've been a member for some time, I live in Stoke Newington with my wife, two children and two cats. I've been a Leica user for a long time, since university days really. My first Leica was the M3, then M6, then M-P, then M8 and now, M-E! The birth of my second has prompted this new purchase, dropping prices too really. Paid £2100 for it, 2 months old, box and papers etc. I think its a pretty sweet price. The M8 will be sold but its funny, on the eve of its sale, I feel suddenly quite attached to it. Perhaps when I try, for the first time, full frame, I will bin the M8. I had a mild amount of regret parting with my M-P film camera, to fund the M8, and I did that back in 2008. Since then the M8 has been annoying, with its crop factor and very limited ISO range, however, I did use it, outside, and it was great. I took some wonderful shots including the birth of my first child, Ramona, my cats, my wife, etc.... (Freudian analysis given the order?!) Anyway, it took arrive tomorrow. I opted for the newer M-E given it remains a current line and the 22 month passport remaining, any ideas on how to extend this? I think my M8 came with a five year passport. Ringing around the London dealers, I was shocked to find out that R. G. Lewis succumbed to the Internet, although they weren't too friendly at the best of times, so perhaps not all that surprising. The M-E seems an odd camera, I smiled to read it was described as a budget Leica! I am sure it has some haters on this forum, these people preferring the M9-P, but this weekend, having caught up on all things Leica, I realised the M9 remains a great camera, but the price tag of the M9-P makes it unaffordable for me. I read there was some quality issues with the M9 series, all of which I hope have been corrected in the M-E offering. I'll be snapping away like mad some tomorrow, new baby and super excited to have a full frame again, with 18 beautiful megapixels at my index finger. It will also be very very nice to get my 35mm f2 back, using it as a 46mm for the past seven years has been ok, I would just take a step back when framing, but for me, the 35mm is THE lens to have. Needless to say, I have been for many years now, a one lens photographer. The M8 may be kept as a spare body, given its falling prices... but I cannot really afford to keep an £1000 paperweight, esp. with one lens. Lets see. Look forward to making new friends and sharing images. Yours, ShivaYash PS Written in haste/ excitement + new baby crying, so apols for any typos. Advertisement Posted July 27, 2015 Posted July 27, 2015 Hi ShivaYash, Take a look here New M-E owner. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
earleygallery Posted July 27, 2015 Share #2 Posted July 27, 2015 Hi, The M-E is essentially the same camera as the M9, not a 'budget' version in any way, apart from the paint choice they made for it instead of the usual black or silver chrome. But it's different! Be aware though that some M9/ME sensors are suffering from 'corrosion' - there are plenty of threads on the forum about this issue. I would check yours on arrival to make sure that it's not affected. Leica have apparently found a cure and are replacing defective sensors free of charge. Unless you have a need for your M8 I would sell it now - as you say prices are falling and if the LCD on the M8 fails it can't be replaced. Sell it while it's all functional and you can still get a good price for it, and add another lens instead.
ShivaYash Posted July 27, 2015 Author Share #3 Posted July 27, 2015 Yep - I think the M-E will be perfect for my needs and hope it gives me a nice and long (5-7 years plus) service life. I'll be posting the M8 for sale on the classified section soon, although may want to break my cardinal rule and swap it for a lens or two, second hand of course. geotrupede Posted July 27, 2015 Share #4 Posted July 27, 2015 my advice: keep M8 as backup, it is still a good camera...
ShivaYash Posted July 27, 2015 Author Share #5 Posted July 27, 2015 I'd prefer the cash... or as a sloppy second, to buy a lens. What do people think of Zeiss lenses?
asiafish Posted July 27, 2015 Share #6 Posted July 27, 2015 I'd prefer the cash... or as a sloppy second, to buy a lens. What do people think of Zeiss lenses? The 50/1.5 Sonnar is magical wide-open.
stebesplace Posted July 30, 2015 Share #7 Posted July 30, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) Welcome! I'm new to the forums here, but been with Leica for some time. You'll enjoy the M-E, and like others mentioned, it's not a budget version other than it doesn't have a viewfinder preview lever, or USB port. Whoop de do. You get everything else, and the paint is fairly indestructible so it should hold up well over time. I'd sell your M8 ASAP so you can get the cash in for a new lens, whether you go Zeiss or Leica. Zeiss are great, good bang for buck, but once you work with a Leica, it does make the Zeiss feel a bit cheaper. But they both will take about the same level of quality photo. Have fun with the M-E! Thanks. Yes I've shot with Leica now since 2002/2003 and can't go back. Loving the M-E. Shooting daily.
ShivaYash Posted July 31, 2015 Author Share #9 Posted July 31, 2015 Should the M-E, an official UK import model, have come with a UK plug figure of eight cable?
adespen Posted July 31, 2015 Share #10 Posted July 31, 2015 I bought mine with the Schott glass, from EBay about two years ago and it quickly became my favourite camera. I have an Angelo Pelle half case, cutout for the grey ThumbsUp which is nicely brassing. using the M-E is wonderful, as I have to think different when shooting. It's not snapping or squirting like my Canon 5D2. It accompanies me almost everywhere, 6 weeks in Europe with the new 35 summicron and a Canon G12 i thought I would be using my 50 f2 more but I am I realise a 35 man. It took me a while to remember to take the lens cap off, so now it stays at home. I have a skylight filter to protect and use a folded stubby holder ( for beer cans) over the lens while in my shoulder bag. Images to follow when I get out of bed today. mazeltov to you on your wonderful new additions to family and heart.
rapids41 Posted August 3, 2015 Share #11 Posted August 3, 2015 I Own an black M9-P, but I think the M-E is a very nice Camera because Black and chrom lenses are looking good attached. I would sell the M8 and buy a secound Hand 75 Summarit.
wattsy Posted August 3, 2015 Share #12 Posted August 3, 2015 Should the M-E, an official UK import model, have come with a UK plug figure of eight cable? Possibly not. I seem to recall receiving a digital M in recent years (either M-E or Monochrom) that didn't have a UK plug/cable in the box. Not being a user of the cable (I've always used the charger with an Apple charger plug) I wouldn't have noticed but for the fact that the dealer had supplied a suitable figure-of-eight cable separately in the shipped package. ramosa Posted August 3, 2015 Share #13 Posted August 3, 2015 Zeiss lenses ... I always tend to end up with Leica lenses ... though one of my all-time favorite M-mount lenses was a Rollei 80mm HFT, which was made by Zeiss. (I sold it and, oddly for me, regret it. Unlike many, I'm fine with selling lenses according to my needs and, of course, price. The Rollei 80mm is very rare, though, so selling it means pretty much not getting one again.) Like you, when I moved past the M8 (which I loved), I was happy to get back to the normal focal lengths and depth of field, etc. Just the normalcy of it was refreshing. And you'll love the M9, especially for color. At lower ISOs, I still think it's hard to beat in color.
