Jeff S Posted July 31, 2015 Share #21 Posted July 31, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) +1 it will always be the case Not always…depends on the lenses….as Puts once wrote about the MATE... "How excellent is the performance. Not every person will like the conclusion, but the 3E is clearly superior in all optical parameters to many Leica lenses of the 28, 35 and 50 focal lengths. With the exception of the mentioned 5 lenses (28 current and 3rd generation, 35 ASPH and immediate predecessor: (the 7 element Summicron) and the current Summicron 50) the 3E will outclass any other Leica lens of the 28, 35 and 50 focal length of previous generations by a large margin." He drew somewhat different comparisons to the then current iterations, but the point is that one shouldn't generalize. And one certainly shouldn't take the word of other commenters (including me); rather, one needs to actually make prints with his/her own style and workflow to draw conclusions. Even in the thread you started on the 30-90, some thought the zoom was the same, or better, than some primes; others differed. And earlier threads on that lens in this forum (easy search) show typically diverse views. Across brands, there are nice primes and superior primes…and crap zooms along with stellar zooms. Zooms may have other pros/cons (speed, size, etc), but the days when one could conclude that zooms are inferior IQ-wise are no longer so simple. Lots of these guys say the zoom is a perfect walk around lens but at 5.6 and ideally 1/500 you would need to be walking around Arizona to get enough light to shoot this hand held
xiaubauu2009 Posted August 1, 2015 Share #23 Posted August 1, 2015 I have tried the Contax 645 45-90mm zoom lens on a credo 50 digital back. And it is very sharp in the centre, but not so on the corner. On a cropped sensor such as Credo50 or Leica S, it can shift about 10mm with no problem, but suffer quite bit of distortion and softness at edge. And obviously there are size and speed issues….exactly as I wrote in my last sentence of the post you quoted from me. Jeff

Jeff I find the 28-35-50 MATE quite sparkly, or maybe I'm just lucky with the copy I have for my Monochrome. For me, I travel with that lens and a 50 Summilux ASPH. Regarding the 30-90, tremendously convenient, and convenience can get shots you otherwise would miss -- IQ be damned!
