Wayne Posted July 13, 2015 Share #1 Posted July 13, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) I asked this on the "Customer" forum, but think it may be better asked here. I have purchased a 28 2.8 Elmarit vII lens. This lens included the Leica hood but did not include filters. As I understand it, the filter arrangement is such that the filter is fitted into the hood and retained there by a retainer ring, which has been screwed onto the front of the lens. It is also my understanding that the Lieca designation for this filter arrangement is "Series 7" and "E48." That is the extent of my knowledge. In reviewing numerous Ebay auctions, I encounter the term "Series 7" attached to many of the retainer rings up for bid. Frequently these auctions will mention specific lenses, e.g. 135 Elmarit, that the item is suitable for; but 28 2.8 is never mentioned. Additionally, the auctions do not mention the thread size for the "series 7" retainer rings up for bid. Q1: Are all "series 7" retainer rings the same? My understanding is that my lens will accept a 48 screw-in filter. Examining the clearance between the top of the filter threads and the highest point of the front lens glass, it appears that, if I were to install a standard 48 threaded filter onto the lens, there is a significant chance the filter glass would come into contact with the lens glass. Q2: Are my concerns regarding inadequate clearance between lens glass and filter glass justified? If so, is there a specific brand/model of screw in IR filter that will safely work on this lens? My preference is to use the Leica prescribed filter-in-hood arrangement; however, this is proving quite a challenge to me. lct Posted July 14, 2015 Share #2 Posted July 14, 2015 Q1: Are all "series 7" retainer rings the same? To my knowledge yes (14161). Q2: Are my concerns regarding inadequate clearance between lens glass and filter glass justified? If so, is there a specific brand/model of screw in IR filter that will safely work on this lens? Do you mean IR or IR-cut (aka UV/IR) filters? I don't know for non-Leica filters but E48 filters are prescribed by Leica specs (attached) as well. Better order a Leica filter if you're not sure but i can't seem to recall if Leica did offer E48 UV/IR filters. 16.pdf
pgk Posted July 14, 2015 Share #3 Posted July 14, 2015 I have this lens. Simplest solution by far is to use Series 7 filters - though the UVIR is not that common and always quite expensive. Others (UVa, B&W filters) seem to be very reasonably priced at the moment.
lct Posted July 14, 2015 Share #4 Posted July 14, 2015 Why is it difficult to use E48 filters? Just curious.
Wayne Posted July 16, 2015 Author Share #5 Posted July 16, 2015 I ordered the B+W 48 ir/uv filter. I should know in a couple of days.
bocaburger Posted July 16, 2015 Share #6 Posted July 16, 2015 My guess is a series 7 filter (approximately 49mm diameter unthreaded) would be retained in the hood on that lens, as it is in a 12504 hood for a 35mm Summicron. IIRC from my R days, the lenses that took a Series 7 using a retaining ring had 54mm threads, not 48mm, thus the retaining ring would be too large for the 28 Elmarit. I used Leitz Series-7-to-e55 adapters on those R lenses.
Wayne Posted July 16, 2015 Author Share #7 Posted July 16, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) The B+W 48 IR/UV filter arrived today. It fits perfectly on my Elmarit VII 28 2.8, and does allow me to install the 12501 hood. Thanks for the direction.
