Here are some examples (not mine) with the WATE and a7ii http://blog.kasson.com/?p=10903. Fine, but some room for improvement.

I'll put up a comparative (v M240) pic or two later in the week, if there is demand, but the reviews will be out soon.   Seems that Sony is stocking retailers without announcing that they have done so, presumably to hit the ground running (as Leica did with the Q, at least initially).

The WATE will work just fine with the A7RII - last time I checked that was still a Leica WA M lens.

Yes, the WATE was designed for the M8 and as such had a digital sensor in its design.  I wonder if the new 28 Summilux has an exit pupil designed to be further from the sensor like the WATE.  By the way, the 28 Summilux is the only new Leica lens that has got me excited.  It seems to have the smoothest OOF gradient of any modern Leica lens I've shot.  And, as I've stated here many times... 28mm is just nirvana for me.

From its size, I also suspect the SX28 is pretty telecentric (Olympus' word for this).  I've been shooting almost exclusively with it for the past month or two.  In good light at f/5.6 it renders everything at all distances clearly while still singling out the point of interest. (see an album at

In terrible light at f/1.4 it does the same, although a little more dramatically:

Here http://www.onlandscape.co.uk/2015/08/sony-a7rii-compared-with-sony-a7r-and-canon-5dsr/ are some examples of what the new Sony sensor can do, for those asking for higher resolution in the next M. The dynamic range of the sensor makes the raw images extremely malleable.

And it seems that the A7r II also plays better with wide angle Leica lenses http://www.dearsusan.net/2015/08/03/387-sony-a7rii-review-first-impressions/

Thanks for the pointers.  Unfortunately, to me the dear susan post isn't convincing with regards to WA lenses in general.

"A minor miracle appears to have occurred in that two of my favourite M lenses – the 18mm Super Elmar and 24mm Elmar – appear to show no colour fringing, whereas they were simply awful on the original A7. The 18mm Super Elmar and 24mm Elmar still have some problems (vignetting and softness at the edges) but are much, much better than they were on the A7r1. I would think anything from 35mm on will perform well.

The performance of the 28-90 Leica R lens is maybe not the best on the camera, especially at the wider focal lengths. The Tri Elmar seems to behave well as it did on the previous model.

Jury still out on non native lenses but the general impression is one of impressive general improvement."

Given that film has a DR of maximally 10 stops (FP4) and the M240 over 13 I cannot understand this obsession with extreme dynamic ranges....

It's a different range between highlights and shadows but your on the right track!

  • 1 month later...

Ok, this is just speculation from putting together several sources and ideas.  Leica announced the M8 at Photokina and three years later announced the M9 at PhotoPlus Expo in the US and then announced the M240 three years later at Photokina.  Now, here we are three years later and PhotoPlus Expo is coming in October 22-24, New York.  Leica is coming over and has a pretty big display planed.

Secondly, Leica has most or all of its USA reps. coming to the event to man the show.

Thirdly, my source tells me that Leica is planning a big announcement of a product at the show.  It seems like the new M would be the product Leica would announce in this time frame.

Leica has sure been moving fast with camera announcements; The T and then the Q.  Pretty fast for Leica.  I bet the new M will be announced in October and we will see it in March.

Jono where are you,

Rick

My source told me last week that Leica is bringing all of the US reps to PhotoPlus a day earlier for training.  My source feels that there must be a new and significantly  distinct product for Leica to plan a day of training.  He states this is not the norm for Leica to spend this much time training.

In July when I posted that Leica was planing a big announcement of a product at the show I guessed it would be the new M.  He believes it is going to be something much more.
