Leicabuff Posted July 9, 2015 Share #1  Posted July 9, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi,I bought last October a brand new APO 90mm f2 Summichron-M and couldn't use until now. Upon checking the lens I noticed a white spot on the front element. It looks like a paint mark. The lens was brand new in box and I bought it from Leica store. Could someone please check a similar lens to verify if that is normal or not? The spot looks so perfectly shaped that you would think that is for whatever reason. I know usually it wouldn't have any effect on the photo but I am curious what that is? I added two photos taken with iPhone. The dot is on 9 o'clock. The lens is registered for warranty but I live in Vancouver, Canada. We don't have access to any Leica store or authorized technician. Welcome, dear visitor! Mornnb Posted July 9, 2015 Share #2 Â Posted July 9, 2015 Have you tried cleaning it?
Leicabuff Posted July 9, 2015 Author Share #3 Â Posted July 9, 2015 I tried it but it looks like paint. It is a perfectly shaped spot. As if it is left from cutting the element. It is just unbelievable how Leica product control didn't notice this? Â Would someone please check his/her lens and let me know if that is abnormal? Thanks. earleygallery Posted July 9, 2015 Share #4 Â Posted July 9, 2015 I can't see a spot, just reflections?!?
Leicabuff Posted July 9, 2015 Author Share #5 Â Posted July 9, 2015 Check 9 o'clock close to the filter thread.
Mornnb Posted July 9, 2015 Share #6 Â Posted July 9, 2015 It's probably not going to impact photos at all. But this is unacceptable for a brand new lens, take it back to your Leica dealer. They would be obligated to handle the communication with Leica on your behalf.
Leicabuff Posted July 9, 2015 Author Share #7 Â Posted July 9, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) Yes, I think it won't have any impact but it is kind of disappointing. Â I didn't buy it in town, as mentioned already. I am not sure if the authorized dealer in town would do me the favor. I might write to Leica Germany or US for suggestion. Â I am afraid the lens has to travel from Canada to Germany and it won't be fixed and then I will get the lens back with more bugs and cleaning spots and scratch. I am speaking from bitter experience with Canon Canada.
Doc Henry Posted July 9, 2015 Share #8 Â Posted July 9, 2015 Hi, not paint mark like this on my 90 ApoStill amazingand not notice that since last October ?it did not take away with cloth optical fiber ? I clean all my lens with this (2 part wet and dry) : http://www.smrehberg.de/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/UVPdigiCLEAN.pdf http://english.sundmrehberg.de/?page_id=177 Henry
wattsy Posted July 9, 2015 Share #9 Â Posted July 9, 2015 Are you sure it won't wipe off with a cloth and lens cleaner? The coating is very tough so don't be afraid to rub quite hard.
earleygallery Posted July 9, 2015 Share #10 Â Posted July 9, 2015 The tiny speck right on the edge of the lens? Â Honestly I wouldn't care about that - I wouldn't even bother trying to clean it.
Doc Henry Posted July 9, 2015 Share #11  Posted July 9, 2015 Can we have an enlarged picture of this region and post here ? Henry
gvaliquette Posted July 9, 2015 Share #12 Â Posted July 9, 2015 Can't tell from the posted pix, but is it on the front surface of the lens, or is it a defect in blackening the edge of the front element? Â However, I agree with James, you won't see any trace of it in the pictures. Â Guy
Leicabuff Posted July 9, 2015 Author Share #13  Posted July 9, 2015 Here is another close up. It is between 1-2 O'Clock and E55 sign on the hood. It is perfect marker "on the first element" for whatever reason.  I tried it with cloth to clean it but not wet. Will have to buy the solution and give it a try or leave it like that and take it to Leica sometimes when I am in Germany.   Welcome, dear visitor! Doc Henry Posted July 9, 2015 Share #14  Posted July 9, 2015 I think the best is to send to Wetzlar. The guarantee is still valid !Hard to tell on a photo, but it's still strange.Fungus on a new front lens ? I do not think so.  Welcome, dear visitor! Leicabuff Posted July 9, 2015 Author Share #15  Posted July 9, 2015 I will probably write to Wetzler first. Perhaps they have forgotton to clean it before sending it out? Perhaps is something (a marker) they use for checking the lens? I only noticed it when I bought a B&W filter and was putting on it. Haven't used the lens not a single time.  However, it is not a fungus. It is on the surface of the glass, not inside the lens. It is outside of the lens. I am afraid to scratch the glass trying to clean it. Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! wattsy Posted July 9, 2015 Share #16 Â Posted July 9, 2015 I suspect it'll come off with a wipe using a soft cotton cloth dampened with ordinary water. You won't scratch it trying.
Mornnb Posted July 9, 2015 Share #17 Â Posted July 9, 2015 Try to scratch it off with your nail, the glass is much tougher than a human nail.
semi-ambivalent Posted July 10, 2015 Share #18  Posted July 10, 2015 don't be afraid to rub quite hard. Here in Denver I would never do that. There is a lot of Granite around here and I'd be paranoid to rub any lens surface hard for fear there'd be a tiny bit of grit, not on the lens, but in the cloth. I had my 35 'cron ASPH a year before I finally had the nerve to wipe it off. (It always has a filter on.) Then again, I've seen video of the good Dr. Kaufmann wiping his 50mm APO with the front of his shirt, so what do I know...  s-a
