M2/3 style film loading on a Leica MP

Recommended Posts

I can't think of why anybody would do it unless something broke on their M4> and all they had available were some spares bits from an M2/3, and even then I'm not sure it is possible. But maybe somebody who likes to change their film really slowly has done it just to aid the experience.

Actually I would look to find a suitable body from an independent dealer, the type who have their own repair guys, and see what deal you can strike for a part exchange. The cost of repair to them will be 'trade' so you might well do better that way than just trying to sell on a faulty camera on ebay.

Hey there,

I would like to know, if someone here has ever modified a Leica M4/M6/M7/MP to the old M2 and M3 film loading system?

Is it even possible theoretically?

Thank you very much, and greetings from Austria :)

...marcelgladbach, bearing in mind the internal dimensions of the film M camera shell and baseplates, I suspect it would theoretically be possible. Having said that, I've got to say I am really curious as to your rationale.

I am of the view that unless there is a compelling reason for the modification, it is difficult to see there the value lies in such an undertaking. To my mind, the shift from the M2/3 system to the current configuration represents real progress, to wit: ease of use, consistency, robustness, speed and a huge reduction in the scope for error whilst loading (inter alia). I speak as someone who used reloadable cassettes 'out there' in the past. Naturally, YMMV.

Please let us know if you are able to get it done. Good luck.

Not to mention eliminating the possibility of dropping a take-up spool into a place deeper than your arm is long. Before our last trip I bought a spare spool just for insurance. $60. No regrets, but...

Why? In fifty years of using Leica M cameras when Leica finally got the clue to make loading film rational it was a blessing. Why go backwards!
